I think that this is a magnificent episode. Former Buffy 'Watcher' now goes to ground as a former Mentor. One with a sliding concern to what is right. Even while watching the episode it is unclear what exactly is happening. Even MI-5 is at a loss explaining it all. The episode has more then one story. It might be traitor's gate, and He might be a traitor to the eyes of his peers. But the episode is in my eyes more about blind followers. When a strict set of rules is appealing on what is right and wrong, the question becomes what happens when the black and white get's changed to shades of grey. When the big picture loses clarity what will you do? When will you stop aiding the painter who mixed the colors in a grey mesh and when the painted picture is no longer clear, or even no longer a picture to protect those you vowed to protect?

That is a serious question to have and the one question this episode does ask in a very interesting way.moreless

    • If you pause the video/DVD at the right time you can see that the intellegence file on Peter Salter actually contains information on Mary Kane. See episode 1 for more on Mary Kane. Edit
  • Notes

    ADD NOTES
    • The American title for this episode is Traitor's Gate. Edit
    • The scene where Tessa explains her treachery to Zoe was filmed at public swimming baths but the scene called for them to be empty, so every time somebody wanted to go for a swim filming had to be put on hold. Thankfully for the production team it was the middle of winter so very few people fancied an outdoor swim. Edit
    • The riots shown in the teaser sequence were originally going to be staged but the production team opted for using genuine newsreel footage for added realism (and decreased budget). Edit

    • (Telling Ellie he works for MI5.) Tom: Well, it's a job, um, with an office, a pension, it's got a canteen. It's not out of the ordinary. Ellie You just got shot. Tom: Well, there are perks. Edit
    • Peter Salter: I am the thing the Security Service fears the most; the spy who walks through traitor's gate willingly. Edit
  • Allusions

    ADD ALLUSIONS
    • Ellie: I'll change my name, too. Call me… Pussy Galore. Pussy Galore was a character from 007: Goldfinger. Ellie compares herself to Pussy because she too is dating a spy. Edit
    • Harry: O when shall we lay down our burdens? A quote from the Bible, which Harry seems rather given to quoting, Matthew 11:28-30. Annoyed that Tom keeps pursuing the issue he asks when he will lay it to rest. Edit
