  • Dr. Fiscus (Howie Mandel) is shot; while the other doctors struggle to save his life, he has what is commonly refeered to as an "afterlife" experience.

To me, this is the best episode of the best TV series ever made. You can take Fiscus's experience at face value or give it whatever meaning you want, but in any case, it is a fascinating exploration of the Judeo-Christian concepts of "life after death". Several characters who died in past episodes are shown, and we see visions of "purgatory", "hell" (which is quite chilling, and different from any other version of hell I've ever seen or read), and "heaven"--all from Fiscus's viewpoint. Other great St. Elsewhere episodes include "Sleep", the two-part "Time Heals", and of course "The Last One", but as I say, to me this is the best of the best.
