Which episodes would be the best ones to show prospective viewers to give them a sense of what the show's like?

If they're willing to devote three hours, I'd show them the pilot (to get a sense of the characters and the hospital) and both episodes of Time Heals.

Definitely have your friends watch the pilot, but tell em that St Elsewhere was instrumental in breaking out Denzel Washington on tv, as well as also showing off the talents of Mark Harmon, David Morse, Bruce Greenwood, Terence Knox, Alfre Woodard, Patricia Wettig, Kyle Secor, Edward Herrmann,Tom Hulce, Eric Stoltz, Christopher Guest, Robert Davi, Michael Madsen, and Kathy Bates to name a few.
