  • The writers developing the O'Brien-Bashir relationship.

This is the first "real" O'Brien-Bashir episode - yeah, "The Storyteller" and "Rivals" came first, but those were lightweight episodes that simply exploited the obvious contrast between the two characters and the strong chemistry between the two actors.

Here we get something much deeper. The meat of this episode is mostly talking between the two characters, but it doesn't matter because Colm Meaney and Siddig are so good. Meaney shows why, at least at this point, he was the best actor on the show; and we finally see Bashir shedding some of the annoying twit persona he had in the early days of the show.

The underlying plot is pretty good too, and well-conceived. Rosalind Chao was offering some good contributions to the show during this period.
