  • A chase episode becomes a hide episode

This Bashir/O'Brien episode has an interesting premise, but the television budget forces the writer to scale back its possibilities. Ideally the action would begin at a lab on the planet, and Bashir and O'Brien would escape and go on the run. Instead, the action begins on a spaceship that's needed for the climax, and the chase sequence on the planet turns into a "hide" sequence on one set. But the Bashir/O'Brien pairing is gold, and it's fun to see the actors moving the relationship forward. Back on Deep Space Nine, Avery Brooks is outstanding as the guy in charge who's torn up over the apparent deaths of his officers but must bury his feelings while he performs the difficult tasks necessary to move forward. One of these tasks is informing Keiko, which gives us one of the finest Rosalind Chao performances of the series.

This episode was nominated for an Emmy for the alien hairstyles, proving that these award shows have no taste. I do have to wonder if the two contrasting hairstyles were the cause of the alien war to begin with.
