From the bottom of the Ferengi comedy barrel comes this Quark episode. The premise is solid. (I wish I could go back in time and pitch the idea of the Grand Nagus hooking up with Quark's mom, because it would have been an easy payday). Some of the gags are funny. (Quark discovering Zek in his closet is especially hilarious). But there are problems that undermine the success of the episode.

The first is that Quark's mom has been recast, with Cecily Adams taking the place of Andrea Martin. It's sort of like replacing Tom Hanks with Jared Fogle. Adams tries to play the part as Martin did, but she just doesn't have the same comic timing. (It's especially disappointing that we don't get to see Martin and Wallace Shawn together, a pairing that would be comic gold).

The second problem is that the silly Ferengi A story is saddled with a silly Ferengi B story: Rom and Leeta have a comedic breakup on route to their comedic decision to tie the knot. It's a trope that's appeared on television too often, including its appearance on The Next Generation in "Data's Day".

But more than anything, the episode suffers from just not being funny enough, despite a nice effort from Rene Auberjonois, directing his third Ferengi comedy. Happily, the Ferengi would fare better in their next farce, sixth season's "The Magnificent Ferengi".moreless
  • The Ferengi genre descends into self-parody.

    6.5
Up until this point, Ferengi episodes were at least entertaining. You usually had a combination of Quark, Rom, Nog, Zek and Brunt to entertain the viewer - so even if a story wasn't great, at least the silly humor would carry the story.

But, along with season 3's "Prophet Motive" and season 6's "Profit and Lace", this story is a low point. Wallace Shawn's Zek is just not that funny this time around. You also have a new actress playing Quark's mom with little of the charisma of Andrea Martin in "Family Business". The Rom-Leeta story is stupid. Really, poor Jeffrey Combs and Armin Shimerman are forced to do all of the heavy lifting.

Fortunately, the 5th season is very strong from this point onward - no more duds.moreless
