  • An old Jadzia story without Jadzia

    6.0
DS9 starts up what it calls "the final chapter", a nine part finale, with this Ezri/Worf romance episode that's great for fans of the Daz/Worf relationship but a bit of a snoozer for everyone else.

Ezri and Worf get the A story, but it seems more like a Jadzia thing than an Ezri one. (If Terry Farrell was still with the show at this point, they could do the same plot). It's an "Out of the frying pan, into the fire" adventure away from the station, giving the two a chance to bicker and quarrel, and ending with... well, as it always does in this sort of thing. Joining the series so late, it's a challenging for Nicole de Boer to establish Ezri as a beloved character even with the best of scripts, but having to deal with old Jadzia stuff doesn't even give her a chance. Unfortunately, Michael Dorn is dealing with the opposite end of the spectrum. He's played Worf in so many Star Trek episodes (holding the Star Trek record for most hours on screen) that it seems as though the writers have run out ideas for him, and they're trying to return to the well once too often (or more).

The station-based B story, on the other hand, shows more promise, though it's more abstract. Sisko and Kasidy decide to get married, but Sisko's status as Emissary complicates the situation. It's a lot of fun to see Sisko so excited about his future beyond Deep Space Nine and undeniable that some interesting things are going to happen no matter how it all turns out.

Meanwhile, there's some exposition from Cardassia Prime, where The Dominion, Damar, and Dukat begin to set some new schemes in motion.

As the opener of a multi-part finale, it's easy to give the episode a pass; it's not meant to pay anything off, it's meant to set stories in motion. But with old Jadzia/Worf issues forming its spine, as an episode on its own it's underwhelming.

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

FILTER BY TYPE

  • TRIVIA (6)

    • When Ezri enters Worf's quarters, we hear dialogue between Worf and Jadzia from previous episodes. This is the last time any material including Terry Farrell would be used in an episode of DS9.

    • If the Defiant arrived at DS9 after the Gander left there heading for the same region, why would the Defiant not have detected her at some point? Unless Lieutenant Dax was obsessed enough to pre-emptively take an evasive course?

    • The model Sisko works on for his Bajoran home was originally Molly O'Brien's doll house.

    • The Female Changeling asks Weyoun how the vaccine is progressing. However, a vaccine is only good for preventing the spread of an illness. She is more likely looking for an antidote.

    • When Sisko places the ring on Kasidy's hand, he places it on her middle finger, however, in the next shot, the ring is on her ring finger.

    • Ezri is a Lt. Junior Grade, but she is wearing full Lieutenant pips, clearly visible in the scene when she tries to convince Sisko the runabout's communications are breaking up.

  • QUOTES (9)

    • Bashir: (about Captain Boday) Oh! With the toothy smile and the transparent skull?
O'Brien: Personally I don't know what Jadzia ever saw in the man.
      Bashir
      : Well, his brains.

    • Worf: I don't want to hear any of your excuses.
Ezri: My excuses? I'm not the one who slept with him.
Worf: You had dinner with him!
Ezri: Who are you angry with? Me or Jadzia?
      Worf: Both!
Ezri: You know what? You're crazy!
Worf: You could make anyone crazy!

    • Sarah: You must walk the path alone.
Sisko: You're not listening to me. I want to spend my life with her.
Sarah: If you do, you will know nothing but sorrow.

    • Sisko: There's a stream running through the property. The soil's perfect for growing kava. I could make my own springwine.
Kasidy: The Emissary's Special Reserve. Should be a big seller.

    • Weyoun: (after Damar drinks a glass of kanar) A bit early isn't it? Even for you.
Damar: Just something to warm my bones. It's freezing in here.
      Weyoun
: The Founder prefers it that way.
Damar: I don't see why we should have to suffer. She hasn't been in here for days.
Weyoun: Feel free to dress warmly.

    • Quark: (talking about Worf) He'll be back before you know it.
      Ezri: You really think so?
Quark: Absolutely. The night before he went on patrol, he brought the Koraga's crew in here and bought them three barrels of bloodwine.
      Ezri: And?
Quark: And he didn't pay the tab. You really think he'd go to Sto'Vo'Kor owing me money?
Ezri: He doesn't even like you.
Quark: Exactly. He couldn't enjoy the afterlife, knowing I had something over him.

    • Sarah: You are the Sisko. You are part of me.
Sisko: If that's true, if you really do care about me, if you do consider me your son, then let me have this.
Sarah: It is not for you to have. There are still many tasks ahead of you. Accept your fate. Your greatest trial is about to begin.

    • Ezri: You have been avoiding me for the past six months now.
Worf: I did not ask you to come aboard the station.
Ezri: And I would've left, but you told me to stay!
Worf: And I'm beginning to regret it.
Ezri: If it wasn't for me, you'd still be drifting around in an escape pod singing Klingon operas!!!

    • Dukat: I may have failed to reopen the wormhole, but I assure you I have no regrets. You see, I've come to know the love of the Pah-Wraiths.
Damar: You almost sound as if you believe it.
      Dukat: I do.
