When Mrs. Tigan meets her in the front room, she says, "I hate your hair." Hadn't she seen Ezri on the viewer previously and had ample time to say what she said?
This may be part of her joining confusion, but Ezri calls Sisko 'her' when talking to Miles over dinner.
The drill O'Brien works on was originally used as a Bolian bank chest from "Who Mourns For Morn?".
O'Brien says that by the time he discovered Morica Bilby's body, he could tell that she had been dead for ABOUT six weeks. However, when they discover that she had been on Ezri's family's company's payroll until six week's previous, he remarks that she was removed from the payroll "the day after" she died. Does he know exactly when she was killed or doesn't he?
Ezri tells her mother she has four lifetimes of experience with parenthood. She must still be confused about the joining, because previous episodes established Dax had five lifetimes of parenting experience, three as a mother and two as a father.
Ezri: But you didn't know him. He was very... gifted. When we were young... he had so much potential. Norvo was the one we all thought would turn out to be something... special. I don't know what happened. I don't know what turned my brother into... I guess I was so busy dreaming of ways to get out of that house... I never saw what was really going on inside it... what was happening to Norvo. The endless humiliations... the constant drumbeat of criticism... the way his heart was carved up into little pieces. I should've seen it. I should've tried to stop it.
O'Brien: You can't blame yourself for that. You're not responsible.
Ezri: But I am. Don't you see? I should've gone home a long time ago.
(regarding Bilby's widow)
Norvo: I tried to reason with her. But she was... very angry. Angry at
the Syndicate. Angry at us. Even angry at her husband for getting himself killed. I didn't go there to kill her, Zee. I really didn't. But she wouldn't listen to me. She started yelling... said our family was no different than the Syndicate. That we were all liars and cheats. Then... I suddenly realized that if she were dead... all our problems would go away.
Yanas: Oh, Norvo...
Norvo: I took care of it. You always said I was too weak to... handle the tough ones. But I'm not. I proved it. I handled a problem that you couldn't. I handled it.
Ezri: Now I remember why I never went into the family business... all these contracts and invoices and balance sheets and shipping orders... I feel like I'm trapped in some kind of Ferengi nightmare.
(talking about Bilby's widow)
O'Brien: The cause of death was the Orion Syndicate.
Fuchida: There's no evidence of that. It could've been an accident.
O'Brien: She "accidently" hit herself in the head and "accidently" threw herself into the river?
Ezri: Nothing simple for Ezri. There're times when the computer asks me to identify myself and I have to think about what to say. Worse yet, there're days when I wake up and I don't even know if I'm a man or a woman until I pull back the covers! I also have an unfortunate tendency to ramble...
(talking about her mother)
Ezri: The last time I saw her was just after I was joined. She came to visit me on Trill. I was still a little... confused. When she walked into my room, I put on a big smile, looked her straight in the eye and said: "Hi, Mom, it's me - Curzon!" Things kinda went downhill from there.
Kira: How much gagh did she order?
Odo: 51 cases.
Ezri: Each containing a different variety.
Kira: There are varieties of gagh?
Ezri: Oh, yes. I can remember what each one tastes like... and the way they... move when you swallow them. Torgud gagh wiggles. Filden gagh squirms. Meshta gagh jumps... (Ezri almost gags)
This episode marks the death of Morica Bilby, the widow of Liam Bilby. O'Brien promised Liam to watch out for her and their two children in the episode "Honor Among Thieves". What happened to the children is not revealed in this episode.
Cirroc Lofton (Jake Sisko) does not appear in this episode.
In this episode we learn that while Trills have family names, those that are joined replace their last names with the name of the symbiont. We also learn that Ezri's name before being joined was Tigan.
The title refers to the bibical parable of the prodigal son. In that story, a young man leaves his home and family. He loses everything and returns. His father is happy to see him while the brother is jealous. In some ways, quite the opposite of what happens to Ezri.
