Star Trek: Deep Space Nine

Season 2 Episode 18

Profit and Loss

Aired Weekdays 11:00 AM Mar 20, 1994 on Syndicado

  • Trivia

    • Goof: At the end of the teaser Natima strikes Quark on his right cheek, yet after turning around he rubs his left cheek.

    • Garak asks Bashir if his noble quote is from "Sarek of Vulcan". Sarek is the father of Mr. Spock.

    • Rule Of Acquisition #223: Beware the man who doesn't make time for oo-mox.

Note: oo-mox is a Ferengi form of sexual stimulation.

    • This is the first episode to refer to the Cardassian dissident movement. By the beginning of the fourth season, it would result in the formation of the Dutapa Council.

  • Quotes

    • Garak: (Garak shoots Gul Toran after he tells Garak that his exile will not be ended) Well, don't just stand there. Your ship's waiting.
Quark: I'm going to see to it that every Ferengi on the station shops at your store.
Garak: (sarcastically) That alone makes this all worthwhile.

    • Quark: Odo, look at me. I'm on my knees... I'm begging you. I don't care why you do it... pick any reason you want. But please, let Natima and the others go.
Odo: All right. I'll do it.
      Quark: You will?
Odo: But not for you. Turning Hogue and Rekelen over to the Cardassians will mean their deaths. I've read their files... and nothing they've done warrants that kind of punishment. I'll free them, Quark. But only in the name of justice.
Quark: Justice... that was going to be my next suggestion. So, you're really not doing this for me?
      Odo: That's right.
Quark: Then I don't owe you a thing. Thank you!

    • Quark: I never told you this Odo, but I consider you as dear to me as my brother.
Odo: And I see how well you treat him.

    • Garak: You'd be suprised how detrimental a poor choice of fashion can be. Take this dress: It may be all the rage now, but it could quickly become tiresome, an affront to the eyes. Certain people may even find it... objectionable. And then - nothing but rags...

    • Odo: So, how well does this woman know you? Just enough to dislike you, or well enough to really hate you?
Quark: She used to work here at the station. She was a correspondent for the Cardassian information service. It was before your time.
Odo: So... which is it: dislike or hate?
Quark: It's none of your business, but if you have to know... I was the love of her life!
Odo: Must have been some life.

    • Odo: I heard an interesting rumour.
Quark: Only one? I started at least twelve.

  • Notes

    • The powerful 1994 Northridge Earthquake struck while this episode was being filmed. Armin Shimerman (Quark) and Edward Wiley (Gul Toran) both hurried off the Paramount lot so quickly after it hit, they were still in full make-up, including their prosthetics.

    • Cirroc Lofton (Jake Sisko) does not appear in this episode.

  • Allusions

    • Casablanca
A bar owner in a multi-cultural port is reunited with his long lost love, who has allied herself with a political refugee, only to lose her at the end when she escapes with the help of an object within his possession - Casablanca! Even the final scene of Garak and Quark walking off is similar to the final scene in Casablanca.
