  • Starts slow, gets better

    7.0
Like the second season finale that precedes it, this unfocused season opener is about change, setting up the future of the series. Introducing the Defiant and resolving Odo's mystery, it packs quite a punch for one hour but many of the scenes (particularly early) come across as contrived and clumsy, with the invisible hand of the writers and directors can be perceived moving the pieces around to get them into position for the future. (When the staff of the Grand Nagus is pulled out of storage just to provide motivation for a character's choice, you know the writers are reaching).

The centerpiece of the episode, however, is the Defiant, the new ship which from a fictional standpoint has been added to combat the threat of the Dominion. From a nonfictional standpoint, the ship has been added to give the series a better and less claustrophobic way than the runabouts to travel and battle. Either way, it's a home run shot, injecting the episode and the series with a tangible excitement every time it appears. (Too bad the same can't be said for the Romulan officer that comes with it)

As the episode approaches its climax, it improves; there's a great Kira/Odo scene, and if you don't get an adrenaline rush from the action packed conclusion, you're a lost cause!moreless
  • Exciting setup and a great cliffhanger.

    8.0
DS9 upended the formula of a season-ending cliffhanger for the second season in a row by STARTING with a multipart episode. In this case, it's largely setup - albeit exciting setup - until the last 15 minutes or so.

In those 15 minutes, we get an intense and violent boarding of the Defiant as well as an unsettling sequence with Odo and Kira. It's the latter that offers some of the richest character interplay of the episode - Kira bothered by Odo's behavior, but nevertheless putting her trust in him.

Not the strongest Dominion Arc episode, but you have to start somewhere. And part 2 is much better.moreless

  • TRIVIA (8)

    • Odo adopted his hairstyle from the Bajoran Scientist who discovered him, Dr. Mora. All of the other Changelings seem to use this style right away.

    • This was the first apperance of Lt. Commander Michael Eddington.

    • This episode marks the first appearance of the Female Shapeshifter and the first mention of The Great Link.

    • It is revealed that Sisko was on the design team for the Defiant at the Utopia Planitia ship-construction yards shortly after the Borg threat became imminent.

    • This is the first episode in which Odo includes a belt for his "uniform".

    • Nitpick: Bashir complains that the Defiant wasn't designed to deal with many casualties. But the ship was the prototype of a new class of warship, and as a vessel built with the sole purpose of fighting, this seems extremely odd. The crew might have been smaller than that on the typical Starfleet ship, but that would only make it more important to have adequate medical facilities, so that injured personnel could be efficiently treated and returned to duty.

    • Sisko mentions to Odo that he spoke to the head of Starfleet Security "herself" about coordinating his efforts with Starfleet. Admiral Thomas Henry was shown in that capacity in the Next Generation's "The Drumhead". Whether he was replaced or retired is not addressed. Another Chief of Starfleet Security was later named in Next Generation's 7th season episode, "The Pegasus", as Admiral Rainer. Presumably, she assumed command of Starfleet security after Admiral Henry retired/was replaced. Whether or not she was court-martialed for supporting Admiral Pressman's illegal activities remains unknown.

    • Goof: As Jem'Hadar ships approach the Defiant, Commander Sisko orders main power to be cut. We see the overhead lights on the Bridge go out. The next scene shows Kira walking into Odo's quarters. Behind her the overhead lights in the passageway are still on, as are the lights in Odo's quarters.

  • QUOTES (5)

    • T'Rul: (referring to the away team of Jadzia and O'Brien) Leave them! We came here to locate the Founders, not fight the Jem'Hadar over two expendable crew members.
      Bashir: No one is expendable!

    • Bashir: (to Odo) Besides, I think we'd all feel a bit better with someone here to watch over Quark.
Quark: I take that as a personal insult, Doctor.
      Bashir: You should.

    • Ornithar: I can't help you to locate the Founders, because I do not know who they are or if they even exist. If the Founders exist, they clearly do not wish to be contacted, and that is good enough for me.
Sisko: Who is the Karemma's Dominion contact for trade, administration and defense?
Ornithar: Our only contact with the Dominion has been through the Vorta. I have no idea who they report to. All I know is that when the Vorta tell you to do something, you do it. Because if you do not, they send in the Jem'Hadar, and then you die.

    • Kira: And this is the ship that Starfleet sends us to fight off an attack by the Dominion?
Sisko: We're not going to fight the Dominion, at least, not yet anyway. Our mission is to take the Defiant into the Gamma Quadrant and try to find the leaders of the Dominion, the Founders. We have to convince them that the Federation does not represent a threat to them.
Bashir: What if they don't believe you?
Sisko: That's why I asked for the Defiant. She may have flaws, but she has teeth, and I want the Dominion to know that we can and will defend ourselves, if necessary.

    • Sisko: Hello, Major. Sorry to startle you, but I wanted to test the Defiant's cloaking device.
      Kira
      : The Defiant?
Sisko: I've brought back a little surprise for the Dominion.
