  • "What You Leave Behind" still makes me cry even when I watch it now. Star Trek: Deep Space Nine was and still is my favorite Star Trek show. And my favorite characters were Odo, Worf (even in TNG) and Quark.moreless

In the espisode "What You Leave Behind" was rather sad to me. As each character began to go their separate ways, it was like a part of my family leaving me. Some I might see again and others I may not??

But why this particular episode provoked such a strong emotion within me, I still don't really understand. Although I did admire Captain Benjamin L. Sisko, as an excellent commander and a good father to Jake. Odo, Worf and Quark were my favorite characters.

I suppose Odo because unlike Data (Star Trek:TNG) he didn't aspire to be more human. I wouldn't say that he despised the human race, but Odo didn't have any close relationship with any either. Not until Kira.. For some reason, Odo was very attracted to her.

I'm certainly very thrilled that they finally got together towards the end. If they hadn't, I would have the same disatisfaction I feel everytime I see a "Kicks" Cereal commercial..."Silly rabbit, Kicks are for kids"

That rabbit has been after that cereal for as long as I can remember...and I'm pretty tired of him not getting to taste them!!! arrrrggghhhh!!moreless
  • A great episode.

I thought "What You Leave Behind" part 1 was a great episode. It really was a great first part of a closing story for Deep Space Nine. I thought that everyone involved did a great job of performing and the show was well written. I enjoyed the battle scenes and all the internal conflict within the story. There was so much going on that I had trouble keeping up. This was an episode that paved the way for part 2. It was well suited to play a lead-in role and was very fitting. I also realized that the end of an era was coming to a close and that there would only be one episode left before it was all over. Thank you.moreless

  • TRIVIA (5)

    • As Worf and Odo are walking to the Defiant, Worf says that he hopes that they will find Colonel Kira alive and well at Cardassia. But at this point her correct rank is Commander, as she is acting as an officer of Starfleet for her mission. Worf, as a stickler for military protocol, should not have made that slip.

    • In "Shattered Mirror", Sisko tells Mirror O'Brien that evasive maneuvers pattern Delta is rocking the ship. However, in this fight, Nog does a loop-da-loop.

    • When Weyoun is giving his speech about the rebels being destroyed, the Dominion logo in the background is reversed, this is caused by the whole image being reversed as the birthmark on Weyoun's face is also on the wrong side.

    • Damar, Garak and Kira's raid on Dominion headquarters is temporarily halted because the cargo doors are made of neutronium and explosives won't work on them. So what? Is the entire building made of neutronium? Why not just blow a hole in one of the walls?

    • The Founder promises the Breen that they can have Earth if the battle for Cardassia is won. Then she turns around and tells Weyoun she was lying to get their support. She talks in a perfectly normal tone of voice, and the Breen is standing just a few feet behind her with his pals. He should easily be able to hear her.

  • QUOTES (14)

    • Ezri: (referring to her new relationship with Julian) You're sure you're not angry?
Worf: Why should I be angry? I have been asking you to tell the doctor how you feel about him for the past month.
Ezri: Well, now that he knows...
Worf: I am happy for you.
      Ezri: That's a relief.
Worf: But, I am going to kill him.

    • O'Brien: (referring to his Alamo model) Molly, please don't touch that.
Molly: I let you play with my toys.

    • Damar: Keep...
      (chokes, then dies)
      Garak: He's dead.
Kira: Remember his orders: we carry out the mission, we stop for nothing.
      Garak: FOR CARDASSIA!!

    • Weyoun: (stunned) I don't believe it.
      Female Shapeshifter: What now?
Weyoun: The Cardassian fleet has turned against us.
Female Shapeshifter: (sternly) Have our forces fall back and regroup at Cardassia Prime.
Weyoun: But we'll be totally surrounded.
Female Shapeshifter: There will be no more running. We should have rid ourselves of the Cardassians at the first sign of rebellion!

    • Broca: If I could talk to the rebels, get them to change their minds...
Weyoun: (offers a suggestion) Perhaps you could reawaken their patriotic spirit.
      Broca: (grabs the suggestion) Exactly!
Weyoun: (burns the suggestion) On the other hand, they're just as likely to convince you to betray us.
      Broca: Me? Betray you? Never!
Female Shapeshifter: That's right. And we're not going to give you that opportunity.

    • Ezri: We really should get up. We don't want the Defiant to leave without us.
Bashir: I've never been into battle with someone I've slept with before.
Ezri: Well, there's a first time for everything.
Bashir: Now that we're finally together, it would be such a shame if something happened to one of us.
Ezri: Let's make a pact: we both come home alive.
Bashir: You've got yourself a deal.
Ezri: I'm holding you to that.

    • Female Shapeshifter: What caused the power failure?
Broca: I'm afraid it was sabotage.
Weyoun: Almost every Dominion installation on Cardassia Prime has suffered damage.
      Female Shapeshifter: Damar...
Broca: We captured some of the terrorists, but they're not soldiers. They're ordinary citizens.
Female Shapeshifter: Are you telling me that the Cardassian people are rising up against us?

    • Dukat: Together we'll free the Pah-wraiths so they can lay claim to the Celestial Temple and destroy the Prophets.
      Winn: And their Emissary...
Dukat: No - Benjamin Sisko will be dealt with by me and me alone.
Winn: Assuming he survives the invasion of Cardassia.
Dukat: He'll survive... but I promise you, he'll wish he hadn't.

    • Sarah: The Emissary's task is nearing completion.
Sisko: Are you talking about the war?
Sarah: You have walked the path the Prophets laid out for you, Benjamin. Do not falter now.
      Sisko: I don't intend to.
Sarah: Know this, my son. Your journey's end lies not before you, but behind you.

    • Weyoun: Citizens of Cardassia, this latest wave of vandalism directed against your Dominion allies must stop. We know that these disgraceful acts of sabotage were carried out by a mere handful of extremists. But these radicals must come to realize that their disobedience will not be tolerated, that you, the Cardassian people, will suffer the consequences of their cowardly actions. Which is why, I must inform you, just a few moments ago Dominion troops reduced Lakarian City to ashes. There were no survivors. Two million men, women and children, gone in a matter of moments. For each act of sabotage committed against the Dominion, another Cardassian city will be destroyed. I implore you not to let that happen. Let us return to the spirit of friendship and cooperation between our peoples so that together we can destroy our common enemies - the Federation, the Klingons, the Romulans and all the others that stand against us. Thank you.

    • Weyoun: You two get out there and make sure no one gets through that door! You two stay here... in case they fail.

    • Kira: Garak?
Garak: All during the years of my exile I imagined what it would be like to come home. I even thought of living in this house again, with Mila. But now she's dead, and this house is about to be reduced to a pile of rubble. My Cardassia is gone.
Kira: Then fight for a new Cardassia.
Garak: I have an even better reason, Commander - revenge.
      Kira: That works, too.

    • Weyoun: Founder, may I make a suggestion?
Female Shapeshifter: (still strangling Broca) Yes, I am sure that Broca will be very happy to hear what you have to say.
Weyoun: If the Cardassian people are responsible for these acts of terrorism, if Damar and his fanatics have turned them against us, then it's the people who should be punished.
Female Shapeshifter: (still strangling Broca) Now what do you say to that?
Broca: (struggles to speak) Severely punished.
Female Shapeshifter: Well, I'm glad we all agree. See to it.

    • Female Shapeshifter: I want the Cardassians exterminated.
      Weyoun: Which ones?
Female Shapeshifter: All of them, the entire population.
Weyoun: That... will take some time.
Female Shapeshifter: Then I suggest you begin at once.

  • NOTES (4)

  • ALLUSIONS (3)

    • Kasidy: Reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated...
This is a quote from Samuel Langhorne Clemens (Mark Twain). Mark Twain said this after hearing that his obituary had been published in the New York Journal. The quote was also paraphrased by Picard in Star Trek: First Contact, as "Reports of my assimilation have been greatly exaggerated."

    • Vic: Ladies and gentlemen, tonight is a very special night for some friends of mine. They've been together a long time. But like the man said... nothing lasts forever. So gang, this one's from the heart.
In reality, James Darren, who played Vic Fontaine, had released an album called This One's From The Heart, which contains most of his songs featured on Deep Space Nine.

    • O'Brien: Somebody has to teach you officers the difference between a warp matrix flux capacitor and a self-sealing stem-bolt.
The Flux Capacitor of course is the item that Dr. Emmett Brown (Christopher Lloyd) envisioned after slipping off his toilet and hitting his head while hanging a clock. The Flux Capacitor is what makes time travel possible in the modified Delorean-turned-time machine that Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) used in Back To The Future. The self-sealing stem-bolt is a reference to an earlier episode in which Nog and Jake trade various items, one of which is a large amount of stem-bolts.
