  • ... it pours?

    7.5
Starting up the second half of "The Final Chapter" (DS9's final 9 episodes), "When it introduces several new plot lines, moving from story to story until it ends so abruptly, the credits can come as a surprise.

Balancing the predictable and unpredictable, Echevarria and Dorn cut a quick pace from the get go and throw everything but the kitchen sink at the viewers. Gowron returns to replace Martok. Bashir must deal with a bureaucratic run around, like someone in our time trying to get help from customer service. Kira and Garak, former friends of Ziyal, are forced to help Damar. And Dukat finally goes too far and gets a lecture from Kai Winn about humility, which is sort of like Kanye West giving a sermon on manners. They're all such diverse ideas, and they're all thrown out so quickly, there's no time for the viewer to stop and process it all until the credits suddenly appear out of nowhere.

What to make of it all? Well, it's like a DS9 sampler, with a taste of the next two DS9 episodes thrown together before the subsequent episodes share the proper servings. Yet as an episode itself, it works splendidly, perhaps even better than the episodes it sets up. Perhaps Michael Dorn and rain aren't such a bad combination after all!

    • Winn: (pulling away from Dukat's touch) Remember your place, Dukat!
Dukat: I thought my place was in your bed.

    • Bashir: (talking about Section 31) They don't want me to find the cure. They're afraid the Founders will get hold of it.
O'Brien: And to keep that from happening, they're willing to let Odo die.

    • Winn: You still don't understand, do you? The Pah-Wraiths have taken your sight as punishment for your arrogance. Only they can give it back to you.
Dukat: I meant them no disrespect. I only wanted to study the book to help you learn how to release them.
Winn: You wanted to see if you could do it without me. Well, you can't.

    • Bashir: Section 31 isn't trying to stop us from finding a cure. They're trying to cover up the fact that they've set out to commit genocide.
O'Brien: Well, if they gave Odo this disease, then they must have a cure.
Bashir: We have to find a way to get our hands on that cure.
O'Brien: (anxious) Before Section 31 gets their hands on us.

    • Hilliard: I'm afraid those files are classified.
Bashir: But... I thought you just asked me all these questions to clear me to receive them...
Hilliard: No, no, you misunderstood. I can't release those files to anyone who doesn't have Sigma-9 clearance.
Bashir: Listen, I don't give a damn about Sigma-9 clearance!! All I care about is finding a cure for this disease!!
Hilliard: I fail to see why you're so determined to cure a disease that infects our enemy. We're at war, Doctor.
Bashir: The Founders have nothing to do with it! Odo's life is at stake!!!
Hilliard: Odo, which by your admission, is known to consort with the enemy.
Bashir: (struggles to calm down) Sir, you have to understand the circumstances.
Hilliard: I don't care about circumstances. If you find a cure, there's a good chance it will fall into Dominion hands. That's a risk Starfleet Medical is not willing to take. Request for the files is denied. Now if I were you, I would drop this matter. Otherwise I will have to refer to Starfleet Security.

    • Dukat: Arrrrrrgghhhhhhhhh!!!!!
      Winn: Dukat?
      Dukat: Adami, help me!
      Winn: You fool!
      Dukat: I can't see!
Winn: I warned you! The text of the Kosst Amojan is for my eyes alone!

    • Gowron: So, Martok, how does it feel to be the most famous warrior in the Empire?
Martok: I am grateful for the opportunity to serve.
Gowron: And you've served well, but you've broadened the burden of this war for a long time.
Martok: I'd do it gladly, and I'll keep on fighting until the victory is ours!
Gowron: No, my friend. I can't ask you to carry this weight forever. It's time for me to take... a more active role in this war. As of today, I'm assuming direct command of our forces.
Martok: Chancellor, I... I don't understand. Are you... unsatisfied with the way I have performed my duties?
Gowron: Would I have given you the Star of Kahless if I was not satisfied? You should be happy. You're a warrior again. No more meetings, no more reports to file. You'll be out there, savoring the heat of the battle. I envy you. I intend to see an end to this war and soon. The Dominion will rue the day they heard my name!!

    • Martok: We are outnumbered twenty to one.
Gowron: What of it? The element of surprise will be on our side.
      Martok: Chancellor, in my opinion...
Gowron: Did I ask for your opinion? Trust me, my friends, I can see it all so clearly. While our allies sit and do nothing, the Klingon Empire will score the final triumph over the Dominion. We'll be the saviors of the Alpha Quadrant. The glory will be ours, and ours alone.

    • Dukat: Adami, I'm not the same man I was during the occupation. The Pah-Wraiths have changed me.
Winn: But they can't change what you did. Do you really think I could let myself be touched by a man whose hands are stained with the blood of my people?
Dukat: When we do release the Pah-Wraiths from the fire caves, your hands will be stained as well.
Winn: The Pah-Wraiths will spare those who they find worthy. The rest are of no consequence.
