Humanity is having one last hurdle to overcome in forming the Federation; in fact we find that the last hurdle isn't going to come from Romulans, it isn't going to come from Klingons, it comes from our own last vestiges of intolerance."

Flaming Lips bass player and co-founding member, Michael Ivins, his band manager, Scott Booker and his wife, Jennifer, appear as extras in the mining colony. Their appearance was arranged after Scott met Connor Trinneer by chance in a Los Angeles restaurant. The pair hit it off immediately and remained in contact. Later, Michael and Scott, both Star Trek fans, jumped at the chance when the opportunity arose to do a day's work on the show.
