  • Not terrible as a Deanna episode. Lwaxana leaves TNG on a not-terrible note.

I'm not a Lwaxana Troi fan, but this is among the best episodes to feature her. That's because she is in a secondary role here to her daughter. Deanna, for all her flaws as a character, was usually not painful to watch, and Marina Sirtis gives a pretty good performance here.

You have to sit through the first 30-35 minutes to get to the meat here. There's plenty of generic TNG here - the stereotypical awkward Deanna romance, the aliens that aren't relevant except as plot devices, Picard seeming just as bored as the viewer. Nevertheless the closing, cathartic scenes are quite powerful, and Marina avoids the over-emoting she occasionally fell prey to.

Watchable, but not much more than that.
