I never understood why all of a sudden Dr. Pulaski all of a sudden appeared in the show for Season two and Dr. Crusher was there for the rest. Where did Dr. Crusher go, and why? Did it have something to do with the actors (i.e the actor who played Crusher was on vacation or something?)

Gates McFadden left the show after the first season I think to go back and do some theater work. (I'm not sure about it.) I'm almost sure we're watching 'The Child' right now.

The writers wrote Dr. Crusher out by having her take over at Starfleet Medical for a year. Wesley was contemplating joining her there, but chose to stay on the Enterprise after talking to Guinan (who also made her first appearance in 'The Child').

I would have liked to know, character-wise, what happened to Dr. Pulaski. Seems a little rude that Crusher could just come back and take over her job whenever she wanted. Not that I liked Pulaski, she was annoying as hell. Good thing she fell down that turboshaft.

I believe it was mentioned at the beginning of "Evolution" that Pulaski had transferred to Starfleet Medical, presumably to take the place of Crusher when she returned.

The main reason Gates left after the first season was that they weren't willing to give her a raise, that other members of the cast got. It was after fan petitioning that they relented and brought her back at the money she wanted.

I think they foreshadowed this pretty good without knowing it at the time, in "Samaritan Snare." For her to get permission without Picard's knowledge to leave Enterprise AND personally supervise his heart surgery meant she had a lot of pull at Starfleet Medical.

Good observation, I hadn't thought about it like that.

I personally thought Pulaski was a huge b****. And I'm sooooo glad that Dr. Crusher came back. I didn't ask questions, I just thanked God for her return.

Pulaski was just a retread of McCoy, and not a good one.

I'm not sure i've ever really liked either one. Even Crusher bores me so I really had no strong emotions for one or the other.

Beverly at least had some variety about her, like being "The Dancing Doctor" or giving a good roundhouse kick in "Suspicions", when she wasn't fawning over Jean Luc.

Beverly is definately best but the two characters are quite different and are both good characters in their unique ways.

    Nothing unique about Pulaski.

Dislikes transporters? Distrusts androids/logic-based minds? Been there, done that.

...other than the fact that she's the only Doctor on the Trek series that was overtly aggravating.

All the rest, from TOS to ENT, were good characters.

Pulaski was just there to give the viewers someone to despise.

That is true. First totally annoying doctor, now maybe that makes her unique, you think?

    Hahaha...could be.

    I can see it now:

A new booth at the Trek conventions, dedicated to Pulaski. Probably centered around throwing water balloons at a cardboard cutout of her, or something anti-Pulaski like that.

I was thinking of burning figures of her in effigy or a dunking booth with someone taunting/nagging the throwers.

There is something unique about Dr. Pulaski - she is one of the few actors to be on both the original Star Trek and The Next Generation. She played two roles on the original show, Dr. Miranda Jones (Is There In Truth No Beauty) and Dr. Anne Mulhall (Return To Tomorrow).

I liked her betterĀ  on TOS, but she was okay on Next Gen too.
