Depends on which season... but at the end of season 7:

    Captain: Picard
    Commander: Riker, Dr. Crusher, Troy
    Lt. Commander: LaForge, Data
Lieutenant: Worf (Worf was promoted in Star Trek 7 to Lt. Commander)

For people with the same rank: the senior (who is longer in service) outranks the other ones.

Also the person who is given command of the ship automatically outranks everybody despite his rank and has to be adressed as "Captain".

Troy and Dr. Crusher normally take the nightshift (stated in the episode where Troy takes the tests to get promoted to Commander).

well under now cicumstances the chain is as staed by other but in times of war if the cpatain and first officer are out of action the security officer can assume comand with the ships doctor consent,so basically the captain can only take charge if the doctor thinks he is ok if not she can appoint or go based on coomand

As of the end of All Good Things:

    Captain: Picard
    Commander: Riker, Troi, Crusher
    Lt. Commander: Data, La Forge
    Lieutenant: Worf

Worf and Geordi both started out at Lt. Junior Grade. Troi started as a Lieutenant Commander. Worf was promoted to Lieutenant after Lt. Yar was killed and to Lt. Commander at the beginning of Generations.

Geordi was a Lieutenant at the beginning of season 2 and a Lt. Commander at the beginning of season 3.

Troi decided to take the bridge officer's test after the encounter with the Quantum Filament (Season 5's 'Disaster'). She passed and was promoted to Commander in season 7's 'Thien Own Self'.

I still don't get how Troi suddenly out-ranks Data simly
    by taking a test?

It's difficult seeing Troi out-ranking someone who is better than her in pretty much everything under the Sun (aside from empathic abilities).

Not exactly. She does have the power to declare Picard unfit for duty, but this is not something she can do whenever she feels like it, only under special circumstances. The rest of the time, she is following orders, like anyone else.

I don't think you can go strictly by rank when trying to figure out who outrank who. For example, Worf is left in command of the ship far more than either La Forge, Crusher, or Troi. Sure, Worf is only a Lieutenant, and the others are Commander or Lt. Commander, but when Worf is left in command of the ship, he immediately outranks all the others. Take a look at the season 1 episode "The Arsenal of Freedom" for a good example of what I mean. At the time Lt. Logan outranked Lt. JG La Forge by rank, but La Forge still ordered Logan to command the saucer section when he decided to separate the ship. Captain Picard left him in command, automatically making the highest ranked officer on the ship until he was relieved of duty. Taking this into account, I believe this to be a more accurate chain of command:

    Picard
    Riker
    Data
    Worf
    La Forge
    Crusher
    Troi

I welcome your thought on this.

    ^ I don't entirely disagree.

Picard was obviously at the top.

    Riker no. 2

    Data no. 3

(After she took Bridge Officers Test) Troi no. 4

    La Forge No. 5

    Crusher No.6

    Worf no. 7

It was never established in a scene in TNG whether after Troi took the Bridge Officers test and made it to Full Commander whether she really outranked him, since he was operations manager and had been second officer for nearly 7 years. There was a jest in "Thine own self" that he'd have to call her "Sir." But that's not necessarily definitive.

La Forge technically being Lieutenant Commander outranked Worf, In Gambit when Data was in Command, Data assigned Worf to be First officer, likely due to him being a Bridge Offcier and more accesible to the position.

Crusher gave Worf orders From time to time, and in fact he said to Jono in  Suddenly Human that Doctor Crusher was his superior officer.

The big question is who would be picked to Command in a crisis?

My bet is on Worf, we saw him in charge on the bridge and having it seem more regular in Best of Both Worlds Part 1 and Data's Day. Also in Best of Both Worlds Part 2, Riker after assuming the Captaincy, spoke to Worf directly and made it clear (to me at least) that he considered bumping him up to First Officer.

I think its important to separate rank and general command structure from succession in situations when the Captain isnt present. Picard is Captain
    Riker is 1st Officer
    Data is 2nd Officer
After that it is really whomever is designated from amung the senior officers. Worf is lower than LaForge, but his position makes it easier for Data to use him as 1st Officer when Picard and Riker were off the ship. However, when Worf openly disagrees with him, he does tell Worf that he can re-assume Tactical/Security and he'll put LaForge in the 1st Officer spot. I really think that the reason why Data didnt originally do that (and still didn't afterward either) is because Worf's normal work is also coordinated from the Bridge, whereas LaForge is usually in Enginneering making it more likely that LaForge taking the role would have a more detrimental effect on engineering, the same would be true for Crusher, it would effect the functioning of her department to lose her for that time to the Bridge. Worf was also a good pick because of the nature of the incidents that had occured (two senior star fleet officers captured and a threat to a founding Federation world)
