when gordi found a way to kill the borg in the episode (I, BORG) by using a computer virus ,he and guinann all of a sudden decided to not do it . i would think of all people he and guinnan would be happy to see them die as a race.

Around the end of the episode, Picard realized that Hugh(the Borg drone) had become individualized and moral, and in addition to not wanting to become like his enemy, he theorized that the concept of individuality in a Borg would be passed to the Borg cube once Hugh was returned to it. This theory turned out to be true, which led to the Borg cube breaking off from the rest of the Borg Collective, and after temporararily being taken over by Lore(Descent I and II), they become a peaceful group led by Hugh.
