I was watching the last TNG episode today (All good things) and noticed that the Data in the past only has one and a half buttons??? Now this had to be done intentionally, but I always remember Data as being a Lt. Comander from the very fist episode of TNG?????? Am Imissing something here?

Actually, (presuming that you're right about Data only having one and a half buttons) the director is the one who missed something - obviously the writers (with amazing incompetence) managed to forget that Data was a Lt. Commander, or else Brent Spiner just forgot to put the extra button in.
