  • Mother is on board.

This Lwaxana Troi episode takes the normally whimsical and flippant mother of Deanna Troi and turns her into a three dimensional, sympathetic character, with Majel Barett sinking her teeth into the meaty material with relish. David Ogden Stiers, a legend in his own right, gives an equally compelling performance as Lwaxana's love interest, and together they carry the episode with the regulars taking a back seat for the first time. The story, mixing the real issues of old age and euthanasia with the Star Trek themes of cultural acceptance and noninterference, has a lot of turf to explore, but ends somewhat abruptly before completing its tour of the issues. Still, what's here is great.
