Star Trek: The Next Generation

Season 3 Episode 21

Hollow Pursuits

Aired Unknown Apr 30, 1990 on CBS

  • Trivia

    • During the scene prior to the credits, Barclay tells the computer to save the holodeck program but does not say "discontinue" or any other command to end the program as is done is in other episodes.

    • When LaForge and Barclay figure out the problem may be coming from one of the cargo decks, they casually walk down the corridor, even though the ship has just a few minutes before it will break apart. Wouldn't they be running?

    • During the swordfight scene in the holodeck, it is very obviously a stuntman in the distance shots instead of Barclay. It's extremely noticable because the stuntman has a lot more hair than Dwight Schultz.

    • When they're running down the list of elements that the computer can't track, they say that computer would be able to scan things if it were "dangerous." Later two elements are mentioned and disregarded because they're both "highly toxic." Geordi even says "yeah we'd all be dead by now." Apparently dying isn't considered "dangerous."

    • When checking out the anti-grav unit Geordi and Reg refer to a "flow capacitator." But when discussing it later on the holodeck, Reg calls it a "flux capacitator" (like the one in Back to the Future).

  • Quotes

    • Data: Query: why do you refer to Lieutenant Barclay as a vegetable?
Wesley: It's just a nickname. It's all in good fun, Data.
Data: Curious. I was led to believe that a nickname is a term of endearment, of friendship. But you only seem to use it to make fun of Lt. Barclay.

    • Holo-Picard: My God, where did you learn to fight like this?
Barclay: Self-taught , mon capitaine! Would you care for a few lessons?

    • Holo-Beverly: (to Holo-Wesley) Manners, my son. Manners. You embarrass me in front of our guests. Master Barclay will spank you if you misbehave.

    • Picard: I look forward to your report, Mr. Broccoli...Barclay.

  • Notes

    • This episode is the first appearance of the recurring character of Lt. Reginald Barclay. He also features in several episodes of Star Trek: Voyager, and had a part in the movie Star Trek: First Contact.
