Commander Riker & Troi take shore leave on Betazed. They are soon joined by Lwaxana Troi. While having a peaceful picnic. Who should also show up? Daimon Tog, a admirer of Lwaxana Troi. He kidnaps them and requests beam up. While being held hostage we find Lwaxana is who Tog is really wanting. Tog is attracted to her. While the others are in a holding cell. Lwaxana later seduces Tog. She convinces Tog to release everyone else. Wesley misses his ship to Starfleet Academy. Captain Picard grants Wesley field promotion to full Ensign. I rate this one a 7.3.
It's unfortunate that the writers kept bringing Majel Barrett/Lwaxana Troi back onto the show, because she was generally annoying and unfunny. However, this episode actually includes one of the less annoying Majel Barrett stories. Unfortunately, leave it to Wesley Crusher to ruin her moment in the "wow, she doesn't suck" sun.
The Lwaxana plot is OK. Not great, not bad. It's probably most significant for introducing "oomox" into our vocabulary.
But the Wesley plot... uggh. In the 2nd season the writers generally managed to avoid the "Wesley saves the day" story, but one of the minuses of the 3rd season was a relapse into that junk. I couldn't help groaning repeatedly.
This lighthearted episode serves as a vehicle to bring back Deanna's mother back for her annual visit and bring forth the oft forgotten Will/Deanna relationship. The plot is paper thin, but the characters shine because the actors play up their endearing quirks, which have been well incorporated into the story by the writers. The subplot with Wesley (and its resolution) seem a throwback to the first season, but at least he's getting better dialogue here, and the subplot joins up nicely with the main story. All in all, however, this is one of those perfectly acceptable/not too memorable episodes.
