  • Talky and Slow, but not too bad

This talky prime directive dilemma episode falls a bit flat because neither of the substories pick up any steam, and the main guest star (John Snyder) is a weak love interest for Troi. Their romance provides the foundation for the A story, where Snyder's diplomatic character, Aaron Conor, grapples with the dilemma of needing help but not wanting outsiders to influence his people. He comes off as a weenie. And Troi, who is struggling with her own dilemma of wanting to be with this guy but also knowing she must remain professional, could obviously do much better. Meanwhile, La Forge and one of the colony's scientists (adequately played by guest star Day Young) try to find a way to save the colony in the B story, which doesn't provide must of a spark either. Providing a backdrop for both stories are the science fiction issues of a genetically engineered society, though the pros and cons are only touched upon and not significantly explored.
