  • More Searching for Spock

    8.5
This highly anticipated (and highly rated) episode serves merely as a setup for the second part, but is quite interesting in its own right. The main story (featuring Data and Picard) threads its way through the Vulcan, Klingon, and Romulan cultures and includes one last performance by Mark Lenard as Spock's father, Sarek a gem of a scene. (On the downside, the Klingon stuff is mostly filler.) The writers wisely balance this "search for Spock" story with a mystery for the rest of the crew that only becomes more important (and more intriguing) as the two parter progresses.
  • This is a fan favorite and probably the most significant link to the original series. However, the episode is a bit too much set-up and not enough substance.

    8.0
The first half of a two-parter inherently involves a lot of set-up, but in this case it's overdone. Yes, we see Spock in the last 30 minutes of the episode, but that's small satisfaction.

There are several things that boost this episode. First, Picard and Sarek's final meeting is intense and powerful - really, the best part of the episode and perhaps the entire two-parter. It's a wonderful farewell to the character.

Second, the sequence with Picard's attempt at sleep and Data is hilarious.

Third, while the story with Riker and the crew gets no satisfactory resolution in this half, it builds a nice air of mystery.

Fourth, while the time spent on Romulus is brief, it's pretty atmospheric. The interaction in the bar, with the extremely paranoid proprietor pledging allegiance to the two interlopers, is well-done.

Unfortunately, there's also a fair amount of fluff here. The sequence with Gowron is largely a waste of time.
  • Captain Picard is contacted by Starfleet Command. It seems Spock has been spotted on Romulas. Picard goes to Vulcan to chat with Sarek and find out why Spock may have went to Romulas. Sarek is very ill and may be dieing, but he chats with Picard anyway.

Captain Picard is contacted by Starfleet Command. It seems Spock has been spotted on Romulas. Picard goes to Vulcan to chat with Sarek and find out why Spock may have went to Romulas. Sarek is very ill and may be dieing, but he chats with Picard anyway. Picard has a idea, he plans on getting a cloaked ship. Picard contacts the Klingon home world. He is successful in getting a cloaked ship. Now Picard and Data are undergoing surgery in order to look like Romulans. They board a Klingon ship and are transported to Romulas to look for Spock.
