Concerning Flight was a great episode of Star Trek: Voyager and I really enjoyed watching this episode because it had a great story and adventure. Voyager is robbed of vital components by a group of space pirates using beaming technology and the Crew track them to a planet where the Captain finds here holographic Leonardo Da Vinci there working for a prince. I also almost forgot to mention how much I like Captain Janeway's new hairdo and it really shines in this episode especially near the end when her and Da Vinci are gliding through the air. I look forward to watching the next episode!!!!!moreless
  • It's ok. That is all.

    7.3
Pretty generic star trek episode. John Rhys-Davies is always good, but not much really happens here. Another random, nameless race of delta quadrant jerks attacks Voyager, and they spend the episode trying to retrieve what was taken. Between the EMH, 'Revulsion', and 'Concerning Flight', this writing crew has really been on a hologram kick. Harry is still dull. And honestly, I feel like Chakotay should have blown some of those ships out of the sky near the end of the episode as Voyager was descending. This episode is decent enough to watch, but does nothing to advance the overall plot and isn't memorable.moreless

Voyager is attacked by a group of unknown ships. The ships are stealing things like weapons and other federation technology. They are able to accomplish this scheme by using a high energy transporter beam. The Doctor is not too happy about this. His mobile emitter has been stolen. The Doctor is forced to stay in sickbay. Guess who else has been stolen? Da Vinci, who was in the holodeck at the time the attack was occurring. Janeway and Tuvok beam to the surface of the planet where the thieves are conducting business. Janeway does locate “Voyager’s technology”.moreless

  • QUOTES (9)

    • Da Vinci: Machines that fly through the air. Lightning flung from one's hands. Mechanical women who live in boxes. These things I have seen. And these things I must recreate.

    • Da Vinci: Catarina, we're flying!
      Janeway: Like the birds!
      Da Vinci: Like the birds!
Tuvok: I have a fix on the Captain. They are... in mid-air, on what appears to be a crude gliding apparatus.

    • Da Vinci: When Petrarch climbed Mount Verdoun and saw all Europe below him, he knew he was witnessing the birth of a new age. He was witnessing the Renaissance-- the rebirth of our world. So, Catarina, at this summit here, you and I will be reborn-- reborn with wings.
Janeway: (stares out at precipice) This could be a problem.

    • Janeway: Leonardo, whether you like it or not, they do need you back home. In Florence, Milan, Avignon -- they need your genius, they need your heart (voice hardens) and right now, I need you too, so come on.
Da Vinci: I will not go for Florence, or Milan, or Avignon. But for you, Catarina, for you I will go.

    • Da Vinci: I will not leave this New World.
Janeway: Your New World is a prison! You're under his control.
Da Vinci: When are we not in prison? Hmm? When are our lives free from the influence of those who have more power than us. Hmm? I-If this New World is a cage, then it is a cage of gold, of marvels, of opportunities. If this prince is violent, violence can be tempered.

    • Tuvok: I must admit, your Mr. Da Vinci is an astute observer of nature. These maps could not be improved upon by Voyager's topographical computer.
Janeway: He was a Renaissance man, Tuvok. Interpreted, reinterpreted, deconstructed, fantasized about, all through history. Vasari thought he was an angel, Freud thought he had a problem with his mother. James T. Kirk claims he met him, although the evidence is less than conclusive.

    • Da Vinci: (over shouts and jeers) Animali! Bruti animali! Animali!
Florentine Man: No, Leonardo, you are the animal.
Florentine Man #2: A bird who cannot fly.
Da Vinci: Better than a man who cannot think.
Florentine Woman: The pigeon speaks! Cuckoo! Cuckoo!
      Da Vinci: (growls angrily)
      Janeway: Maestro!

    • Da Vinci: Where exactly are you from?
      Tuvok: Scandinavia.

    • Tuvok: Vulcans do not make small talk.
      Janeway: Improvise.
Tuvok: (to Da Vinci, forced) Thank you, that is very considerate.
Da Vinci: (shouting after Janeway) Catarina! Wait a minute.
Tuvok: (forced) Mr. Da Vinci, how have you been?
Da Vinci: Bellisimo. Now, if you will pardon me.
Tuvok: (still forced) I wish to speak with you.

  • NOTES (4)

    • The Star Trek: Voyager novelization titled Violations by Susan Wright features a similar premise to "Concerning Flight" - the theft of the ship's main computer core. However, the book is not canonical.

    • John Rhys-Davies (Leonardo Da Vinci) is credited as a special guest star.

    • At the end of the final scene, while Janeway and the Da Vinci hologram are walking together and the camera zooms in on Da Vinci's drawing, closed-captioning reads, though only music can be heard on the audio:

Da Vinci: Do you speak French?
      Janeway: Un petit peu.
Da Vinci: It so happens I might have use for an assistant in France. (Janeway chuckles)

    • In syndication, the scene where Tuvok makes small-talk with Da Vinci is cut except for the opening portion in which Tuvok first engages him in talk and states that he wishes to know more about him.
