  • Scorpion (2)

Scorpion (2) was a perfect episode of Star Trek: Voyager and I really enjoyed watching this first episode of the 4th season. The story picked up right where it left off as Captain Janeway made a deal with the Borg. Chakotay made a fateful decision which affected every thing. It was pretty cool to see more of all the aliens and space ships and their battle scenes. I also liked the Borg representative, Seven of Nine. Kes was still having a psychic connection with the aliens. It was interesting to see where they are from. The end of this episode was interesting and a great new turn in the Voyager story. This is also an origin episode for Seven of Nine, and her first introductory scene was awesome, almost like a birth of Venus but in Borg fashion. I look forward to watching the next episode and rest of this season!!!!!!!!!

  • Making a deal with the devil is never easy.

This is an excellent episode. It's very reminiscent of Best of Both Worlds, II with the Captain on the Borg ship at the beginning, but goes in a very different direction.

While this episode features the introduction of Seven, yet another bad day for Harry Kim, the Doctor working overtime, Kes linking with Species 8472, and oh yeah the battles between the Borg and Species 8472 armadas...the core of the story really is about the fable of the scorpion and the fox and the relationship between Janeway and Chakotay.

Janeway's sickbay bed scene is very moving, and shows how responsible she feels for (stranding) her crew in the delta quadrant. It's all-consuming. On top of that, the two of them disagreeing over the best way to achieve that goal is a departure for the show. This is an excellent episode, and a great "two-parter".moreless
  • Voyager and the Borg team up to beat Species 8472...

This episode is the conclusion to the exciting Series 3 finale.

Janeway is injured as the Borg vessel tries to escape the new enemy and Chakotay takes over. It doesn't take long for him to dump the Borg - but Seven of Nine sabotages the ship and takes them into fluidic space where the new enemy lives. Kes continues to get messages that show that Species 8472 could be worse than the Borg! Then the captain recovers, seemingly gets rid of Chakotay and teams up with the Borg. They shoot their way out of fluidic space and then Seven of Nine turns on Janeway. But Chakotay finds a way to disrupt Seven from the Borg and they escape from the rest of the Borg ships. The ending comes quickly and the resolution is a bit artificial. However, the acting between Janeway and Chakotay is good and the introduction of Seven is fantastic. This character will become a catalyst for many interesting stories in the future - and her interaction with the crew will develop all their characters for the better.moreless
  • Conclusion. It seems the species 8472 and the Borg are in a battle. The Borg are losing. The Doctor has found a way to beat species 8472. Janeway beams aboard the Borg ship Janeway finds this a perfect opportunity to become allies with Borg.moreless

Conclusion. It seems the species 8472 and the Borg are in a battle. The Borg are losing. The Doctor has found a way to beat species 8472. Janeway beams aboard the Borg ship Janeway finds this a perfect opportunity to become allies with Borg. The plan is to give the Borg a way to beat 9871 and have guarantee safe passage through Borg Space. Later Tuvok beams aboard the Borg Ship. The Borg tries to assimilate Janeway and Tuvok. Janeway says they need to stop or the deal is off. The Borg chooses Seven of Nine to work with Janeway.moreless
  • A lot of excitement, but this episode tries to wrap things up too easily.

I really enjoy the concept of species 8472. They obviously put a lot of thought into this creature. It is one tough, merciless alien with technology that has no comparison.

But, with all this power, how was Voyager able to defeat it so easily? This is a creature that the Borg couldn't "put a dent in". The Borg have assimilated knowledge from *thousands* of aliens (as evidenced by them giving the name species 8472 since they count all the alien life forms they encounter starting with 1).

Now, here comes Voyager! With a few days to think about this alien creature and pretty much nothing more than the equivalent of a DNA sample they are able to destroy their ships with single shots! That defeats the purpose of coming up with such a cool creature as 8472! The bottom line is that they should have spent many episodes trying to figure out this alien (while running awat for their lives!) before they find a way to destroy them.

An exciting episode, but a great opportunity lost at the same time!moreless

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

  • TRIVIA (2)

    • While Seven of Nine, Janeway and Tuvok are discussing the best way to disperse the nano-probes,Seven heads towards a console and pulls up a diagram of a nano-probe mine, which happens to be the same design as the Borg vessel that attacked New Berlin Colony in Star TreK: The Next Generation episode "Descent(1)" and "Descent (2)".

    • Goof: Seven of Nine is able to speak after the Borg deck is depressurised and before it is repressurised, which should not be possible when there is no matter to carry the sound waves.

  • QUOTES (6)

    • Chakotay: I want you to know that disobeying your order was one of the most difficult things I have ever had to do.
Janeway: I understand...and I respect the decision you made, even though I disagree with it. What's important is that, in the end, we got through this - together; I don't ever want that to change.
      Chakotay: Agreed
Janeway: Good. Well, I think it's time we got back to our bridge.
      Chakotay: No argument there!

    • Janeway: Right now, your enemy believes it is invulnerable. If we create smaller weapons, using our torpedoes, and destroy a few of their bio-ships, it may deter them, convince them to give up this war.
Seven of Nine: You are individuals; you are small and you think in small terms. (Seven of Nine pauses as she consults the Collective) But the present situation requires we consider your plan.

    • The Doctor: I'll delete myself at the first sign of trouble. Well, maybe not the first sign.

    • Tuvok: How did you acquire this information?
Seven of Nine: We are Borg.
      Tuvok: Naturally.

    • Janeway: Do you have a better idea?
Seven of Nine: We are Borg!
Tuvok: I take this as a yes.

    • Seven of Nine: You are erratic, conflicted, disorganized. Every decision is debated, every action questioned, every individual entitled to their own opinion. You lack harmony, cohesion, greatness. It will be your undoing.
