Year of Hell (1) was a superb episode of Star Trek: Voyager and I really enjoyed watching this episode as the crew finally encounter the Krenim who challenge Voyager. I liked the way the story unfolded though I wonder why neither the Captain or any of the crew remembered the warning given by Kes. Did it have some thing to do with time? Other than that the story was pretty good and interesting. I liked the Krenim leader Annorax and his scenes. There was lots of action, intrigue and drama in this episode. I look forward to seeing how things work out in the next episode!!!!!!!

  • Entertaining but lots of tech and plot flaws

Entertaining is the best I can say regarding this episode and the following. You won't regret watching both. But, don't take the tech issue seriously. Oh, not again that time travel plot! This time unfortunately it's full of flaws. To start with, after the so many warnings Kess gave the captain regarding to avoid contact with those bad guys (the Crenan or whatever they are called) with time phase torpedoes, Puff! All crew seem to have gone on amnesia to throw themselves straight in the wolf's jaws. Also, all the time changing theory is completely absurd. So, if you think that all those inconsistencies will bother you, don't even care to try this one.moreless

  • good idea, but MASSIVE plot error!

    "Good"
12 episodes earlier 'before and after' Kes travels through time and witnesses the Krenim attack, when she returns to the present she warns voyager of the race they will meet in the near future,Tuvok agrees to gather all information he can on them ....then 12 episodes later Voyager meets the Krenim Imperium yet the crew seem to have forgotten all about them and don't even recognise the name, poor kes!

A good double episode and the time travel eps are always special, but as far as storyline goes..if you miss this episode then it doesn't matter, because technically...it never happened. (not that you wasted two hours tho...save that one for Endgame)moreless

When I watched this episode for the first time, I wondered what in the world was happening to Voyager? It was getting dismantled and nothing the crew did made any difference. It kept on getting worse and worse and the deaths piled up faster and faster. It was a well written episode with great action, good acting, and a great plot with a nice storyline. It was also very refreshing to see the ship actually have a dire problem and have to do unheard of things in order to get moving again. It also should the vulnerability of the ship and the crew. Thank you.moreless

  • Worth waiting 3 seasons for. Kurtwood Smith is even more evil/insane than he is as 'Red' on That 70's show.

    Well, this was pretty awesome.

Let's start with the negative. According to the notes, a scene with Janeway mentioning Kes' premonition about the Kremin was cut from the episode. I felt like this was a huge mistake; It's a critical point and numerous allusions to Before and After are made, most importantly the undetonated torpedo. A few scenes felt incomplete due to this.

That's about it. Everything else is great. Kurtwood Smith is super creepy as Annorax, a deranged Kremin perfectly willing to obliterate entire races to restore his own. It's pretty wild seeing Voyager so badly damaged, and the crew - particularly Tuvok - so injured. I'm assuming this story arc will conclude with a timeline alteration, restoring Voyager, but I've been wrong before.moreless

    ADD QUOTES
    • (Janeway's speech to the rest of the crew) Janeway: Each of you has done your best, but determination alone isn't going to hold this ship together. It's time we faced reality. We've lost nine decks, more than half the ship has been destroyed, life support has nearly gone, Voyager can no longer sustain it's crew. I promised myself that I would never give this order, that I would never break up this family, but asking you to stay...would be asking you to die. You will proceed to the escape pods and evacuate this vessel. Set your course for the Alpha Quadrant. Along the way, try to find allies, secure faster ships if you can, anything to get home. The senior staff and I will remain onboard as long as possible. We will try, somehow, to rescue Tom and Chakotay. The escape pods are equipped with subspace beacons, that's how we'll keep track of you. When we find each other again, and we will, we will find each other again, I expect all of you to be in one piece with some interesting stories to tell. Good luck! Edit
    • (Tuvok and Seven are walking down the corridor when they bump into Neelix) Neelix: Mr. Vulcan, sir. A tactical question if I may? Tuvok: You may. Neelix: We're just about done rebuilding the internal security sensors, and we're ready to program the audio signal. Do you want it to say "Intruder Alert", or shall we try something a little more dramatic like "Warning, Intruder Alert" or "Intruder's among us! Danger! Danger! Intruders among us!"? Tuvok: "Intruder Alert" will suffice. Neelix: Go with the classic, understood sir! (Neelix walks away. Tuvok continues to talk to Seven) Tuvok: And you believe you have difficulties? Edit
    • Ensign Brooks: Seven.
      Seven: Ensign.
      Tuvok: A friend of yours?
Seven: My... cabin-mate. As a Borg I was accustomed to co-habitating with thousands of other drones, but I it significantly more difficult to live with a single Human.
      Tuvok: In what way?
Seven: Ensign Brooks is negligent. She leaves her equipment lying around the quarters and her clothing on the floor.
Tuvok: Indeed. I have found that most humans are less than meticulous when it comes to their domestic habits.
      Seven: Indeed.

    • Paris: (to The Doctor) Physician, heal thyself! Referencing Luke 4:23 in the New Testament of the Christian Bible. Edit
    • The Doctor: One might say, we've seen the best of times and the worst of times. A reference to a line from Charles Dickens' novel, A Tale of Two Cities. Edit
    • Neelix: Danger, danger, intruders among us!

Neelix's recommendation of this as a warning alert is a nod towards Lost in Space, in which the character of The Robot would usually state "Danger, Will Robinson!" when warning another member of the crew of the Jupiter Two in the series.
