Leonard Nimoy 1931 - 2015
Leonard Nimoy played Mr. Spock in every episode of Star Trek: The Original Series going back to its first pilot, the only actor to appear in every single episode including that pilot. When Gene Roddenberry was given a choice by the network to get rid of either the highly-logical female first officer or the devil-looking alien for a second pilot of the show, he chose to keep the latter because of the need for an alien on his ship, but he merged the first officer's logical behavior into that Spock character, and Nimoy's life would never be the same.

Nimoy was a man of deep integrity, he took his Spock character very seriously and helped develop the green-skinned, pointy-eared character into a more rounded and deeper one. That integrity to develop a richer character resonated with audiences of the 1960s, causing the character of Mr. Spock to become ...Read more

RIP Lou Scheimer (1928-2013)

Although not a "famous" Star Trek name, Lou Scheimer played a huge role in keeping the show going between the original Trek and Next Generation. As a co-founder of Filmation, he was one of the men responsible for Star Trek: The Animated Series. Besides producing the series, he voiced three characters on the animated series.

Not only did he keep Trek going until the first movie came out, he also pioneered the concept of first-run syndication programming with He-Man, which later paid off when Next Gen became a big hit in... first-run syndication.

If folks aren't fans of the Animated series, then anyone watching cartoons in the 60s, 70s, and 80s probably heard his voice, as he played roles such as Orko in He-Man, Dumb Donald in Fat Albert, and Bat-Mite in New Adventures of Batman. He composed music for several of the Filmation series.

Filmation later branched into ...Read more

Star Trek's Mr. Sulu ties the knot

When the California Supreme Court made the historic decision to strike down a ban on same-sex marriage earlier this year, Star Trek actor George Takei and his partner, Brad Altman, were some of the first in line for a license. This Sunday, September 14, the pair made it official in a Los Angeles ceremony that included nearly 200 of their friends.

"Space...The Final Frontier. These are the voyages of the Starship, Enterprise. Its 5-year mission: to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no man has gone before!"

The series is set in the 23rd century where Earth has survived World War III then moved on to explore the stars. Humanity has allied with other alien races and formed the United Federation of Planets, and Starfleet serves as its exploratory and military branch. Captain James T. Kirk of the starship Enterprise explores the galaxy with a crew of 430 men and women, contacting new life forms, conducting diplomat missions, and exploring the unknown.

Star Trek premiered on NBC after executive producer and creator Gene Roddenberry produced not one but two pilots to convince them of the quality of his show. The series ran two years but never achieved good ratings despite building a small but solid fan following. A letter-writing campaign convinced NBC to run a third season, but Roddenberry left in protest and the network buried the show in a late Friday night time slot.

After its three-year run Star Trek began running syndication where it was discovered by legion of new fans and became a phenomenon. This led to an animated series, six movies, and four spin-off television shows. Despite its short network run, Star Trek has become one of the most successful shows in television history.

Aside from its three main stars, Star Trek featured a large cast of reoccurring guest stars that includes James Doohan, Nichelle Nichols, George Takei, Walter Koenig, Majel Barrett, and Grace Lee Whitney. Other notable guest stars include Diana Muldaur, Gary Lockwood, Ricardo Montalban, Sally Kellerman, Julie Newmar, Frank Gorshin, John Colicos, Roger C. Carmel, William Campbell, Ted Cassidy, Michael Ansara and Elisha Cook, Jr. Notable writers for the series include Gene Roddenberry, Gene L. Coon, George Clayton Johnson, Jerry Sohl, Jerome Bixby, Robert Bloch, Theodore Sturgeon, Harlan Ellison, David Gerrold, and D.C. Fontana.moreless
