Abrams is not remaking Star Trek: The Motion Picture, and even if he were, I don't see why that meant they would chose to remake Wrath of Khan next.

Yeah, Abrams's movie is supposed to be a "re-imagining" of Star Trek, and it will pre-date any of the TOS movies anyways. So it should be pretty far removed from TOS, for ... something or for worse.

From what I hear thre new movie is supposed to predate TOS. If you've seen the trailers they are assembling the ship in them.

I think though that its a bad idea having a totally new cast to play characters we already know. They shoulda done a DS9 or Voyager movie instead

You can't remake ST:WOK, this is a classic; Ricardo Montalban would also be required, he can't be replaced!

I don't think Khan is even canon anymore.

All the mucking around in the past seems to have erased him; Voyager's "Future's End" clearly shows 1996. Is Khan "absolute ruler of over a quarter" of Earth? No. Is the planet ruled by a handful of dictators? No. Is there any "Eugenics War"? No.

With none of that, there is no Botany Bay. Therefore, no Kirk picking up Khan in space. Therefore, no Star Trek II (or III or IV, for that matter).

Actually, the consequences go even further. No Star Trek II means no Star Trek III. Which means the Enterprise didn't get destroyed, which means no Enterprise-A. So how did they get to E?

If only they hadn't made that one Voyager episode....

I highly doubt that even Berman and Braga would make an episode in Voyager that would negate ST II. I'll have to watch it to see. In any case, the stronger canon should win out, in which case the episode will be outside of the canon rather than the film and I'll pretend it doesn't exist. : P
