It says that Matt Damon might be playing Captain Kirk. I think he is a good pick for the role. Now this might be a stupid question...but I am assuming they are going to be doing the whole how Kirk and Spock met thing, right...before they were on the Enterprise. I haven't really heard anything about it so I was just wondering!

Abrams refuses to say that this will be set during their Academy days, and it wouldn't surprise me if it weren't Kirk or Spock at all, but another Constitution-Class ship's crew during that era.

That actually sounds really interesting if they do it right. Of course, no one could ever replace Nimoy and Shatner. Make sure to tell your grandkids that in case they get confused.

Maybe we should save time by throwing our money at the nearest theatre and hating it right now!

Seriously, though, if ST:Enterprise was such a bomb, with its way-too-advanced-for-pre-Kirk-era technologies, how good can a new version of a post-ST:E and just pre-ST:TOS movie possibly be?

By indirect example, if not rant, does anyone think that the new James Bond is in the least as attractive as any of the other Bonds? (I'm including the cast of the original "Casino Royale" version, with David Niven as Sir James Bond, and Woody Allen as his hero-worshipping, but misunderstood and evil nephew, Jimmy Bond!) So, just throw money there, too, but hate it now! (and couldn't they wait a couple of months to air it in the wonderfully Bondian year 2007?)

I don't get why so many people have problems with prequels. I like the idea as long as it's done right (which for me would mean no well-known actors playing Kirk, Spock, or any other major TOS character). Yes, I know that there's a much better chance that it kills Star Trek for good than reviving it, but I'm willing to give it a chance because I'm honestly curious about what happened in the time between Enterprise and TOS. I really hope this prequel will include the first canonical appearance of Captain Robert April and maybe even a young Christopher Pike as well as a young Kirk and Spock. Saying this, I think it would be better for Kirk and Spock to have not met until Kirk was chosen to suceed Capt. Pike and so I am a bit leery about the movie, but I'm still cautiosly optimistic.

Takei mentions on the Star Trek website that now might be a good time for a new animated series, with the old one coming out on DVD and some of the original stars still surviving, that whole new avenues for TOS could be explored. And that could include April, who was on TAS -- speaking of which, the Star Trek website has also been doing a poll to see if TAS should be made canon after all, and I agree with that. Maybe they could work that into a new animated series in preparation for the new movie, you think?

A new animated series would be great as long as it's canon and it would be great timing to have it coincide with the release of the movie. Personally, I want TAS made canon as long as the Roddenberry family has no problem with it, because their wishes should be respected considering making TAS canon would go against Gene's wishes. However, I do wonder how "Bem" would fit if TAS becomes canon because the stardate given would put it during the refit that happened in between TOS and TMP.

If you mean something like (or even by) Genndy Tartakovsky's, wonderful, animated, "Star Wars", "preview" micro-series, shown on the Cartoon Network (which, IMHO, far exceeded the quality of all three Star Wars I-III episodes), then I agree that it's a great idea!

Well, Roddenberry was an executive producer on the animated series. I always thought the "non-canon" proclamation was coming mostly from Paramount, though I never understood the complete story.

Oh, goody. I'm in. Please go see Star Trek the New Voyages and tell me what you think of them. In Harm's Way merges the doomsday planetkiller with the Cage (the orignal premier episode.)
