Looks like I'm in total agreement with you on those episodes. Season 1 got off to a slow to steady start, Season 2 was way better and Season 3 kind of sucked. It's no wonder their 5 year mission was cut short by two years.

Looks like everybody is in agreement about "And The Children Shall Lead". I vote we make it the worst episode of Star Trek.

    5.  Spock's Brain
    4.  Shore Leave
    3.  Plato's Stepchildren
    2.  Friday's Child
    1.  The Empath

Although this would be my bottom 5, there's a pretty big gap between 4-5 and 1 thru 3.  I can still sit down and watch "Spock's Brain" and "Shore Leave".  I don't even bother to do so with the other 3 episodes.

    I second that!!

    5. Shore Leave
    4. Plato's Stepchildren
    3. Charlie X
    2. The Way to Eden
    1. And the Children Shall Lead

I will sit down and watch all of these, though. The Way to Eden especially, as it always makes me laugh!

"Way To Eden" had that "honor" for years but it does have some entertainment value, so will cast my vote for Worst Episode...Ever! to "And The Children Shall Lead."

See, the thing about Spock's Brain is that it contained the line where Kirk asks the men where the women are, and they respond, "Oh, you mean the bringers of pain and pleasure." I don't care how dumb the rest of the episode was, that like is classic!

    "That Which Survives"
    "And the Children Shall Lead"
    "Plato's Stepchildren"
    "The Mark of Gideon"
    "Turnabout Intruder"

Not that a lot already listed aren't close, though I think "Shore Leave" is creative, "Charlie X" and "Miri" pretty good, and I really liked "The Empath"...

I for one can't believe that "Turnabout Intruder" or "Day of the Dove" would be on anyone's 'worst' list -- these are two of Trek's top episodes!

    The worst:

#5 The Empath (Not a bad idea presented in this story, but the execution of it is a total snooze!)
    #4 The Cloud Minders
#4 And the Children Shall Lead
    #2 The Omega Glory
#1 The Way to Eden ("Entertainment value" only if you find PAIN entertaining!)

That's not to say that there aren't a bunch of other episodes that are nearly as bad as those five, such as:

    The Galileo 7
    The Alternative Factor
    Metamorphosis
    Catspaw
    Who Mourns for Adonais?
    The Apple
    Obsession
    The Immunity Syndrome
    Return to Tomorrow
    The Ultimate Computer
    Spectre of the Gun
    Spock's Brain
Let That Be Your Last Battlefield
    That Which Survives
    The Lights of Zetar

And the FIRST season emerges as the series' best!

I don't know, "Turnabout Intruder" and "The Empath" both turn on Shatner's hammy acting...in one case, its a switched personality caused by a ghost in the machine technology, in "The Empath", its something different. I also like idea that Spock and Bones, two different "species" could both be willing to sacrifice, despite totally different thinking patterns.

In "The Empath", Kirk says "You've lost the capacity to feel the very emotions you've brought Gen here to experience"...he's caused computers to malfunction with logic, acted to get the people on Emeniar 7 stop having a computer war, etc. This seemed like an instance where he got a race of people to examine the values they have about life and death. I admit "The Empath" is overacted, they spent no money on sets (but the Vyans had pretty expensive makeup)...the reason I liked "The Empath" was its much bigger message than something like "Plato's Stepchildren", where the inhabitants are merely bored and enjoy manipulating people.

Agreed, plenty of good ideas went into "The Empath", but there are other factors to consider. You can take good material, and totally ruin it by what you do with it. My beef is with the snail's pace of the episode. Bring it back to me edited down to a half-hour episode, and we'll talk.

Even "The Way to Eden" was conceived very differently from what resulted. Dorothy Fontana developed an idea during the second season for a story about Dr. McCoy's daughter "Joanna". The major plot aspect was an ideological conflict between the two. But things went wrong going into the third season, and the notion of Dr. McCoy's daughter being in the story were abandoned. We ended up with some painful camp about space-hippies! That character finally became Irina, the young woman from Chekov's past.

Gee sorry, that probably wasn't even relevant....

Er, that should be "WAS abandoned..." I had said "plans for", but changed it to "notion of"....

...and the web feature for re-editing a post after submission doesn't seem to work.

Also, I was close to putting "The Tholian Web" in my original list of "additional bad episodes". I feel it's the series' most widely over-rated episode.
