    1. Spectre of The Gun* - or "Gunsmoke" in space!

    2. A Piece of The Action* - or "The Untouchables" in space! (it doesn't help that shatner's wiseguy accent is truly abominable)

    3. Who Mourns For Adonis? - Being as tall as he was in this episode I kept growing alarmed that I was accidentally going to see up his godskirt and see his godschlong.

    4. Charlie X - I wanted to punch that mangy little twerp...grrrr....so annoying (I'm getting upset just thinking about that little effer)

    5. The Paradise Syndome* - or "Space Injuns!"

lol *these episodes are really telling examples of how Star Trek TOS continually had their special effects budget cut!

I've only just reached the start of the second season, but my top 5 in no particular order, are:

    1: Balance of Terror,

2: City on the Edge of Forever,

    3: A Taste of Armageddon,

4: The Conscience of the King and

    5: Space Seed

    Honourable Mentions go to:

    1: Court Martial,

2: Arena (there but for the ridiculously slow Gorn punch),

3: Tomorrow is Yesterday (might have made the top 5 if not for the final scene, which made me yell at the screen "Time travel does not work like that!!"),

    4: Errand of Mercy

    5: The Menagerie

    My bottom 5 are

    1: Miri,

    2: The Enemy Within,

    3: This Side of Paradise,

    4: Charlie X and

    5: Mudd's Women.

I held off giving my five worst episodes, as I have been re-watching the whole of the series, and some of the episodes I hadn't seen in some years.

I'm surprise that some of the episodes that have made people's lists, but to each their own. And although the qualuty of the series was generally quite high, I also think people who say "There are no bad episodes" are being unrealistic.

Anyway my personal countdown, with 1 being the worst:...

    5. The Omega Glory - not quite the worst episode, and ordinarily I'd like the adventurous setting, but this one just didn't work for me, and was a sign of how the series was going off the rails a bit by this point

    4. The Apple - the earliest episode on my list, I just found this one uninteresting and dull

    3. Spock's Brain - coming at the start of the third season (no doubt to tie in to Spock's huge popularity), this marked how the series had moved from intelligent, well devised stories, to gimmicky mush like this.

    2. Elaan of Troyuis - in my view, undoubtely the single most dull episode of the series. Totally ship-bound, and no interesting story to speak of; I'm surprised more people didn't name this one

    1. The Way To Eden - the single worst (and most embarrasing) episode of the Original Series. Space hippies indeed! I'm all for putting (then) current things into a space age setting, but at least give them an interesting spin. This one is truly abysmol to watch.

So there is my five. I know others will disagree!

Well, in the 2-plus years since I addressed this topic, I'm glad to see there's been some backup on my view of "The Empath". There's also been great difference of opinion on "Metamorphosis". I enjoyed most of trekgirldana's comments in her list, apart from "Turnabout Intruder" -- doesn't seem to make a strong case for why the episode is "5th worst". And it occurs to me I could add some more episodes to my "additional" list, bearing in mind that these may not really be AS bad as those I mentioned already:

    The Corbomite Maneuver
    Mudd's Women
    The Man Trap
    Miri
    The Squire of Gothos
    Return of the Archons
    Space Seed
    Bread and Circuses
    Elaan of Troyius
Is There in Truth No Beauty?
    The Tholian Web (added already)
    Wink of an Eye
For the World Is Hollow and I have Touched the Sky
    The Mark of Gideon
    Requiem for Methuselah
    The Savage Curtain

I have to agree with what a lot of others have said about "Miri". And while "Space Seed" is ostensibly not too bad, it just seems like the whole time Kirk is just ASKING for trouble! In the end, despite the fact that Khan is strong enough to force open a security door, Kirk, still recovering from his vacuum-chamber experience, manages to best him in a fistfight!

Although I'm not prepared to formally add "Court Martial" to the list, I have come to appreciate in recent times that it's not as good as I used to think it was. Likewise "What Are Little Girls Made Of?" And while "Operation—Annihilate!" plays pretty well, it's a little embarrassing when they act like an intense blast of ultraviolet light would have NO effect on a person, just because it's not "visible" light! James Blish was sufficiently bothered by this that he changed the key factor to "a rotating magnetic field" in his adaptation, citing it later as the only major change he ever made to a story's plot.

Noting about "The Omega Glory" and "Let That Be Your Last Battlefield", that they were popular un-faves: they each contained germs of good ideas, but ended up severely wanting -- it's telling that both of these episodes were ones that were developed early on, but had long delays in actually being produced. "Omega" was one of three stories considered for a pilot after "The Cage" ("Where No Man...", which was chosen, and "Mudd's Women" being the other two), and "Let That..." had sat around since the first season, finally being produced in the third season so as not to let the money spent on the story go to waste!

The Five worst eps of Star Trek: 1) The Mark of Gideon

    2) The Changeling

    3) Elaan of Troyius

    4) Balance of Terror

    5) Court Martial

I nominate these five all for the same reason: because they're dull! Eps like `Miri', `The Empath', `Spock's Brain' etc are much more entertaining.

    The Squire of Gothos
    And The Children Shall Lead
    Who Mourns for Adonis
    Spocks Brain
    The Gamesters of Triskellon
I really perfer to pick out the good in movies and shows, but when I have too, these will do. In most episodes there's at least one or two really good saving grace moments. In these five I found none to my liking.

Hmmmm... I'm supposed to only choose the 5 worst episodes. I can think of at least 10 right now, but here goes nothing:

    (1) And The Children Shall Lead.......a nice idea, but a bad script.

    (2) Any of the "Parallel Planet" episodes.......the premise was okay once, but they used it over again, and again, and again.

    (3) The Alternative Factor......to paraphrase Kirk, "But what about Lazarus?". A confused script and horrible direction.

    (4) The Savage Curtain.......I'd rather have Ken Shamrock fighting on my side than a wimpy looking Abraham Lincoln.

    (5) Turnabout Intruder.......The U.S.S.Enterprise ends it's 5 year mission prematurely with a whimper, not a bang.
