That was not Scotty, then. It was James Doohan.

Alright, last I heard, the rocket that was supposed to take him up had been grounded since sometime last summer. I didn't hear that he went up on the Discovery.

"Connecticut-based UP Aerospace, which builds its 20-foot rockets in Highlands Ranch, plans to carry the cremated remains of Mercury astronaut Gordon Cooper as well as those of the actor who played Scotty in the TV series Star Trek, James Doohan. The company's next launch is scheduled for mid-to-late April."

I'm pretty sure Gene Roddenberry's ashes were sent into space. I believe on the same ship as Timothy Leary, though it may just be my mind melding memories together.

James Doohan's ashes along with the ashes of astronaut Gordon Cooper are supposed to be shot into space on the privately owned Falcon 2 rocket later this year. The rocket is owned by the SpaceX company which is owned by Elon Musk, the co-founder of PayPal.

    James Doohan bound for space

The remains of the late James Doohan will be sent into space later this month.

Texas-based company Space Services recently announced that some of Doohan's remains have been placed in a rocket in Las Cruces, New Mexico. Lift-off is scheduled for April 28, after a two-year delay.

Doohan, who played Chief Engineer Montgomery Scott in the Star Trek TV series and movies, had died in 2005.
