Conversion was a very interesting episode where we got to see a Sheppard in a darker light. After being attacked by Ellie in the previous episode he started mutating or converting into a Wraith mix. The Atlantis team decided to go to the planet with the bugs which are related to the Wraith to find their eggs to use the embryonic stem cells to find a cure for Sheppard. In the end they were unsuccesful and Sheppard had to do it himself. It was also interesting to see the dynamic between Weir and Colonel Caldwell play out, as he assumed Sheppards duties and was quick to start changing things around with out discussing it with Weir, which upset her. This was an entertaining episode, if at times slow, but still had some action.moreless
  • Shepard goes wild!

Well i liked this episode for a number of reasons. First it's always nice to see the "hero" put in a dark light, like an evil twin brother, with a bit of wraith and a twist of bug. Second it was high time to see Teyla kissing at last, actress Rachel Luttrell's first on-screen kissing scene, and thirdly always nice to see scenes with Jason Momoa step by step fitting in + the occasional McKay jokes and God complex. A highly entertaining episode that sure will do much more than just entertain you. The other i'll leave it up to you.moreless
  • After Ellia tried to feed on him Sheppard is infected with the retrovirus. Slowly but surely Sheppard is changing to more of the bug DNA than human. His team under Dr. Beckett's supervision must get some of the bug embryos to offset the retrovirus.moreless

Basically a continuation of the last episode Instinct and Thirty Eight Minutes from the first season. Sheppard begins to have capabilities well beyond his normal ones even before the obvious physical effects of the retrovirus. Superior speed with no wearing out, superior reflexes in things like combat, and a higher aggression level. At one point after beating Teyla one handed with the pole weapons he backs her against a wall and forces himself on her kissing her. He tells her to call him John when they are not on missions.

Dr. Beckett of course is put in charge of coming up with a solution. In the end the only thing that seems to make sense is to add the bug embryos to break down the virus which will turn them human. I would assume that is the scientific solution. I'm fairly intelligent (if I don't say so myself :) and I couldn't follow their logic on this one.

In his absence Colonel Caldwell is making hay while the sun shines changing as much about security as he can get away with despite the fact Dr. Weir asked him to assume the post while Sheppard was out of commission and just maintain things. You could see Caldwell planning the funeral before the body was cold!

In the end it is Sheppard himself who must retrieve the embryos as the team sent in loses two men trying but failing. Amazingly enough (sarcasm) the treatment works and Sheppard goes back to looking like Sheppard.

Despite the shoddy science on this one (I think the writers wrote themselves into a corner) this was a very entertaining episode. The acting superb especially Joe Flanigan who got to act a little Wraith like in this episode. The bug cave was a little of a disappointment but was creepy enough. Plus I liked how Teyla call Sheppard John at the end. Thanks for reading...moreless
  • Try to be a wraith for a second..

It was different and they always know they way how to bring new angles to the show. Now, one of them is wraith. Not the way Teyla little is, but totally - transforming from human to Wraith and acting like one. But as it is Sheppard, he knows his abilities and tries to protect everyone else from him.

For me, the best part, somehow was the beginning. When Sheppard does not understand yet how much he is chancing and he being faster than Dex, more skilled than Teyla and acting like.. in very good mood Sheppard. And the bug cave - those little nasty things.

    Great one.moreless
  • good episode...

After Sheppard's run in with the female wraith off world he seems to be different. His wound healed unnaturally fast and he slowly starts mutating into a wraith type creature. He looks really cool during each stage of the mutation and I love his eyes...Anyways, the story was interesting, but unoriginal. Stargate SG-1 did an episode similar to this one called Bane where Teal'c was bitten by a creature and changed into it. SG-1 has also done a few other ones that are similar. However, Atlantis made the idea their own and did a pretty good job. Overall, good story, good action, good make up, just a good overall episode.moreless

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

  • TRIVIA (6)

    • Nitpick: The radios on a Atlantis must work REALLY well. When Sheppard wakes up and notices that his injury is getting worse, he puts his radio on, clicks it on, and says "Hey Doc, this is Shepherd". Some how, the communications systems just knows that, of all the doctors on Atlantis, the Doc he wants is Carson.

    • Goof: When Carson radios Elizabeth to meet her in her office he is wearing his lab coat. When he arrives in the control room he has changed to his expedition jacket. Then he changes back into his lab coat when he returns to the Infirmary. In the middle of a crisis that threatens the life of one of the top expedition members, not to mention one of his closest friends, Carson spent a lot of time changing his jacket.

    • Goof: When the team arrives at the beginning of the episode, it's meant to be a direct continuation from "Instinct" (as Sheppard is still bleeding). Beckett, however, is on Atlantis in his regular uniform, despite being offworld and in BDUs at the end of "Instinct."

    • This episode was actress Rachel Luttrell's first on-screen kissing scene. To make her even more nervous her parents were on set while she and Joe Flanigan were filming it.

    • Goof: When Sheppard is walking across the Iratus cave you can see that he steps on one of the CG Iratus bugs.

    • Goof: When Sheppard fills the container with eggs, it's so full the eggs are threatening to overflow and spill out. However, once he gets outside and Dr. Beckett takes a look inside, it looks as if it's empty, even if it's from an odd angle. It was so full at least some eggs should be visible at the top.

  • QUOTES (23)

    • Caldwell: Yeah. We keep trying to remove that from the terminals on the Daedalus, but somehow the crew keeps finding a way of putting it back.
Weir: Never get between a genius and a computer game.

    • (About his security detail)
Sheppard: Look, I've made a new friend.
      Weir: It's only protocol.
Sheppard: That's your answer for everything.

    • Weir: John? So, this is when I usually ask you a stupid quesion, like how are you feeling. John? John? Our team got back from the mission.
(Sheppard suddenly appears behind her, the retrovirus extremely advanced)
Weir: The nest was too well protected. We were unable to retrieve the eggs. They tried their best.
      Sheppard: Best?
      Weir: The bugs attacked.
      Sheppard: Try again.
      Weir: I can't do that.
      Sheppard: Why?
      Weir: John...
      Sheppard: No.
      Weir: I understand-
Sheppard: If yo won't, then kill me now.
      Weir: John...
Sheppard: It's better for the both of us.
      Weir: I can't do that.
      Sheppard: Then try again.
(Weir shakes her head no. Sheppard grabs her by the throat and puts her up against the wall)
Weir: We lost Walker and Stevens. I won't send another team. I won't risk more lives.
(Sheppard drops her and leaves the room, taking out the two guards at the door)
Weir: This is Weir, we have a security breach. Colonel Sheppard's quarters.

    • Sheppard: We're gonna beat this...Beckett will figure this out...You're gonna be fine? You really suck at the whole bedside manner thing.
      Weir: I know, I'm sorry.
Sheppard: But I appreciate the effort.

    • Weir: Look, you're very worried.
Sheppard: No, no, no it's a...One of the best weeks of my life is when I got my wisdom teeth out. I was on codiene for a full seven days, this is kinda the same. I know I should be in pain, or the very least freaked out by this and I'm not. That freaks me out more then anything.

    • Sheppard: Anything that has you speechless has me concerned.
Weir: You're going to be fine.
Sheppard: Wow, that's dead man talk.

    • Beckett: But the wound on your arm healed unaturally fast.
Sheppard: If there was a wound.
Beckett: There had to be otherwise I see no reason how you've gotten infected in the first place.
Sheppard: Well, she was spitting an awfull lot.

    • (After kissing Teyla)
Sheppard: I'm not really sure just what happened.
      Teyla: Colonel...
      Sheppard: That was interesting.

    • Beckett: This doesn't sting?
      Sheppard: No.
Beckett: I know you have a high treshold for pain but this...
      Sheppard: This is what?
      Beckett: Gone.

    • Beckett: This might hurt a wee bit.
(Rodney yelps when his splinter is removed while Sheppard doesn't flinch as Beckett tends to him)
      Sheppard: I'm sure it will.

    • Sheppard: (while being wheeled to the infirmary) This really isn't necessary Doc.
Beckett: Yes it is, you got a serious laceration in your arm and you've lost a great deal of blood.
McKay: Yeah enjoy the ride Colonel, they're making me walk.
Beckett: You have a splinter Rodney.

    • Sheppard: I'm going on that mission.
      Weir: No, John, you're not.
Sheppard: Damn it! (punches out window, then looks sheepish) I'm betting that didn't sell you.
      Weir: No, not really.

    • Caldwell: You're working late.
Weir: No, not really. (turns computer to show him solitaire game)

    • McKay: According to the Ancient's database probably a cave: cool, damp and dark which I translate: scary, awful, bad.

    • Sheppard: According to my DNA, I'm 100% John Sheppard.

    • (McKay buttons up his collar while entering the cave with the Iratus bugs)
Beckett: You don't seriously think that's gonna help?
McKay: When they see your neck before they see mine, you won't think it's stupid.
(Several minutes later, Beckett lifts up his collar before trying to harvest the eggs)
      McKay: See! Not so stupid!
      Beckett: Ah, shut it.

    • Weir: How're you doing?
Sheppard: My body's mutating into a bug, how are you?

    • McKay: Well done, Carson, for once again elevating medicine to actual science.
      Beckett: Well thank you, Rodney.

    • Sheppard: Did Ronon shoot me?
      Weir: You had it coming.

    • McKay: Maybe we should make a diversion.
      Lorne: Are you volunteering?
      McKay: I'll shut up.

    • Sheppard: Sore loser. I don't act like a jerk when you beat me.
      Ronon: Yes you do.

    • Beckett: You have a splinter, Rodney.
McKay: It's a very nasty, unpleasant splinter!

    • Lorne: So, what's the plan?
Beckett: Well, we go in there, we get some eggs, and then we come out.
Lorne: Ok. Ronon,'re on point with me. Walker, Stevens, you take our six. Docs? Just stay in the middle and try not to get bit, ok?
McKay: Maybe someone should stay out here.
Ronon: So that you're all alone when a dozen of them come stampeding out of there?
      McKay: I'm in the middle.
