Episode Summary

A League of Their Own (1)

The Justice League Watchtower is hit by cosmic rays, draining most of its power and knocking it towards earth. Static and Gear are brought on board to give it an emergency recharge. However, unbeknownst to the heroes, the power drain allowed Brainiac to escape and infiltrate the tower systems. When he sends the League away on a false mission, Static and Gear are the only ones left to stop him.

  • Crossover

How many times do I need to say that I LOVE crossovers?

I love how Flash and company dealt with Static and Gear.

I love seeing my favourite superheroes together! I miss the shows from now doing exactly this: doing crossovers, working together, etc. etc.
  • Characters

Superman should have been there, it was awesome. Brainiac is one of his enemies and his plot in this episode was one of his toughest.

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

  • TRIVIA (12)

    • In the space fight, Martian Manhunter is wearing a jet pack. Why does he need one if he can fly?

    • J'onn asks Green Lantern and Hawkgirl to provide him cover for when he phases in, yet after he says that, Green Lantern and Hawkgirl just stay in the exact same spot and watch J'onn phase in. Some cover..

    • If Gear was able to download music over and over again onto the main computer of the Watch Tower, successfully halting Brainiac, why in all the experiences with Brainiac have any of the members of the Justice League ever thought of doing something as simple as that?

    • How is that when Static and Gear are in the commands center wondering why Brainiac is still talking to them that they didn't hear a robot that is across the room running and speeding up to them with a spinning razor until the last second? Seems like it'd be impossible to not hear ...

    • Puff says that the Metamen are the four Bang Babies that Static had the hardest time beating. When did Static ever have trouble beating Carmen Dillo?

    • When Static and Gear are eating pizza, Gear has his helmet off and his glasses on. When he puts his helmet back on over his glasses, the glasses disappear.

    • At the end of the episode, Gear sends backpack to take a picture of Static, himself, and the Justice League all together. But in the picture, it shows Gear still wearing Backpack. How did Backpack take a picture of itself?

    • Static says before and after this episode that GL is his personal hero. However, when GL shows up, Static just accepts it off-hand. Wouldn't you think that he'd be just a little bit psyched about meeting his role model?

    • When did Gear and Static find out about Hawkgirl being a Thangarian?

    • Green Lantern doesn't have his black gloves on when he unbuckles his seat belt as the team is about to go into space to retake the Watchtower.

    • As Martian Manhunter is about to phase into the Watchtower from space, he's wearing a spacesuit. Yet, when he phases himself inside, the spacesuit is gone. (Reply: It's possible that while he was able to phase himself into the Watchtower, the suit couldn't go through probably because of the material in the suit.)

    • At first, Gear has to use backpack to connect into the comlink to comunicate with the J.L. Later, Static suddenly is holding a walkie-talkie to communicate with the J.L.

  • QUOTES (8)

    • Virgil: You think my pops will understand I was late for dinner 'cause I had to save the world?
      Richie: Probably not.
Virgil: Okay. Then I'll just tell him it was your fault.

    • Gear: Yo, Brainiac's not too bad on the mic.
Static: "Mixmaster Brainiac". Now that's phat!
      J'onn J'onnz: Yes. Very "phat".

    • Static: There was a face looking at us on the screen. It didn't look human.
Gear: Big deal. We just spent the whole day with a martian and a thanagarian.

    • Hawkgirl: Hey, remember your promise about staying in the corner?
      Gear: But...
      Hawkgirl: In. The. Corner.

    • Carmen Dillo: If I knew Static was friends with the Justice League, I wouldn't have joined you boneheads. Not even to do laundry.

    • Brainiac: You are only delaying the inevitable.
Static: You say that like it's a bad thing.

    • (The robot starts to crush Static and Gear)
Gear: Now I know how my pimples feel.

    • Gear: (about the Justice League) Yo! How come you never told me you were down with these big dogs?
Static: 'Cause it's a secret, so secret that I didn't even know.

  • NOTES (6)

    • The original idea for this episode intended for Static to team up with the Teen Titans, but that show had yet to air and may have caused confusion with a possible different version of the Titans than the version shown on Cartoon Network.

    • Superman and Wonder Woman are the only Justice League members who are absent in this two-part event.

    • This episode continues a Static Shock season tradition. In every season, (with the exception of the first season) Static teams up with a DC Universe Hero. This marks the second time this season and features more than one hero. The Heroes: The Justice League (Batman, Martian Manhunter, Hawkgirl, Flash, Green Lantern).

    • This is the only two-part episode of the series.

    • Semper said he pushed for the idea that the episode teaser begin like a Justice League episode, with no hint of Static. He wanted it to make it look like they were showing Justice League instead of Static to mess with people's heads.

    • John Semper gave a behind the scenes blooper on Batman: "I remember how much trouble Kevin Conroy had saying the line, 'It looks like some sort of space anomaly.' He kept flubbing it and we all kept laughing."

    • The "Shaq-sized robot" that attacks Static and Gear seems to be closely modelled after an enemy from the SNES game "Mega Man X". Both robots have a single optic sensor, large steel claw hands, and the overall body shape is very similar.

    • Static: Whoa! That's a big robot! That's like a Shaq-sized robot!
The second android Brainiac deploys against Static and Gear is even larger than NBA superstar Shaquille O'Neal, who previously guest starred in the episode "Static Shaq."

    • Braniac: All of this base will soon belong to me.
This may be a reference to a big Internet fad, known as "All your base are belong to us" from a badly translated Japanese game, "Zero Wing."
