  • A great introduction.

This is the first episode of the 2003 version of Strawberry Shortcake and lovingly introduces everybody's favorite cartoon redhead. It is one of only four 45 minute episode formats. Despite the length, it doesn't seem dragged out at all. Strawberry Shortcake is out shopping for supplies and items for her sister Apple Dumplin's first birthday. On her shopping adventure, Strawberry Shortcake meets characters who would become her lifelong friends during the series.

One of the things I noticed about this episode is that it has a soundtrack that seems to have a different flavor than the later episodes. Some parts the instrumentation is almost borderline jazzy. As can be heard in the theme song, this Strawberry Shortcake IS hipper and more contemporary. She's less whiny and cheesy as the 80s version and easier to identify with. Maybe the creators realized this and pulled out all the stops to have a fun soundtrack, but its kind of weird that the episodes after this have normal Saturday-morning style soundtracks.

This episode is fun, but it suffers from "pilot episode syndrome". In essence, the creators could only go up from here. The songs got better. The writing got better. The animation got better. In fact I think this show reached its pinnacle sometime during the year with the second opening and into the early ones with the third opening.moreless

  • This is the introductory episode, and it's a good one.

Story: The story is mainly about Strawberry Shortcake going around Strawberryland to gather supplies for her sister Apple Dumplin's birthday. In her journey she met new friends who helped her fulfilling all she needed for the birthday party. After she arrived back home and finished all the preparations for the party, she realized that she forgot to invite guests so she quickly invited her new friends instead. Hmm... I wonder who the guests would have been if she had not met the new friends.

Music: The background music are generally well made. The 4 songs in the episode are also good. The only thing I'm not quite comfortable with is the vocal right after the end of the second song and the copying of this show's theme song in the middle of the story. But it's personal opinion so let's put that aside.

    Graphics:
Since it's the first episode, the graphics still have a long "to-do" list for perfection. Almost all characters here look blind. But as a first try it's still acceptable.

    Educational content:
Generally, the educational content is about accepting new people as friends, even though they look strange and different. But hello, Strawberry. What would Angel Cake say if she saw what you did with her refrigerator?

    Final words:
In general, this episode is a very good start for the upcoming episodes. There are still some flaws but this has a potential. I will give perfect score.moreless

  • Splendiferous, what more can I say?

Aside from formal introductions, Strawberry Shortcake's gotta find supplies for her sister Apple Dumplin's birthday party. Huge strawberries, strawberry clouds, raining strawberries...criminy, that's some good soil. Custard's just crazy about her own species. Hmm...Ginger Snap's got this thing called an Amazing Cookie Machine. Apple Dumplin', cute? Yep. And what cute songs. Strawberry decides to try a cookie until Ginger reminds her, "After lunch." Ha! Who says these characters have health problems despite the surrounding sugary goodness? Wait a second, why is Orange Blossom pouring different colors of juice from the same container? What's with all the characters' eyes? Everybody except Honey Pie looks legally blind; not that I have a problem with such people. Custard's mostly got no pupils at all. Um, is it really okay for the toddler to eat batter containing uncooked eggs? I hear that can be poisonous.

What Angel Cake says: I work alone...But, it might be fun to work with others.
What she means: I work alone...Aw, why not? I couldn't resist.

Strawberry: It's the most beautiful cake I've ever seen.
How I imagine Custard might respond: Don't worry. You'll see even lovelier as time goes on.

Okay, enough rambling. Better move on. The group gets lost and meets Honey Pie, a talkative equine and the only character with organized pupils. Hah! She's too much. "I don't think we're in Cakewalk anymore." Did somebody get that from the Wizard Of Oz? One more friend to go: a boy named Huckleberry Pie. His creative work on some huckleberry bush branches eliminates the need to visit Upper Hat Rack. Uh oh! There goes the wagon, but thankfully not the supplies. Huh, Huck's the first non-cat friend Custard warmed up to. Does someone have a little crush? Hee hee hee. Once back home, Strawberry and crew make some butterfly invitations (yikes, they're haunted) which fly to each friend they've met thus far. Ginger's "Oh, boy!" response sounds like she spoke in Huck's voice. Then comes the third musical number; just look at how Huck and Angel stand back to back, Team Rocket-style. Hey, I remember witnessing that scene during the second line in a previous toy commercial. Ah, Custard is behaving.

An off-site opinion had it that this episode lacks plot because it's comprised mostly of character introductions but that such is okay for the series' start. I couldn't agree more. The drawings and coloration especially have a long way to go, but the show's already gained my greatest confidence. It's gonna be a classic.moreless

This must be one of the best remakes ever made, Strawberry not just keep the only escence of the eighties, she is showed in a new look, really according with this new era.

I only saw Strawberry once in my life, in an old tv special movie, but when I saw her in the new look, it was like be a little girl again, the same escence when I saw her for the first time, a incredible song, I think the opening song is one of the best I've ever heard, I hope to see more episodes of she, she is a character with a long life.moreless

    • You can see Pupcake sing "A Berry Happy Birthday" along with everyone else. Unless he's lip-syncing - a certain possibility indeed - such shouldn't be happening since the dog can't speak a human language. Edit
    • In the first viewing of Apple Dumplin's birthday cake, the apple is topped with icing. Come the next shot, the icing disappears and remains missing for the time's remainder. Edit
    • Orange Blossom pours some purple-colored juice into a bowl for Pupcake, orange juice into cups for Strawberry Shortcake and Apple Dumplin', and more purple juice into another bowl for Custard…all from the same pitcher. Edit

    ADD NOTES
    • This episode can be found on the Game Boy Advance Video Cartridge Strawberry Shortcake Volume 1, only in a half-hour version. Edit
    • On DVD packaging and other merchandise, a different character model is used for Apple Dumplin'. Her outfit is slightly more detailed, but most notably, her hair is yellow rather than reddish-orange and she has a somewhat different hairstyle. Additionally, Strawberry is seen in merchandise in an outfit with small red, green, pink and white stripes, whereas on the program, her outfit contains only large red and white stripes. Edit
    • In this episode, Strawberry Shortcake states that she is throwing a party for Apple Dumplin's first birthday. Apple Dumplin' seems to be rather advanced for a girl of only one-year-old. While many her age would still be in a crib, Apple Dumplin' walks and talks on her own. She seems rather aware of the world around her, as well as much of what is said to her, can mimic the speech of others and speak many words and phrases on her own. Edit
