Grady's parents were Canadian missionaries in Vietnam. The Vietnamese soldiers killed everyone in the village except Grady, who found Beaudreaux in the forest, shot in the leg. The two took care of each other.
Malloy has no first name. Her parents could not agree on one for the first twelve years of her life, at which time they got divorced. By then, Malloy was used to not having a first name, so she never has.
