  • Strike Back's first episode is a fantastic start to what is slated to be a very fast-paced summer action / suspense adventure. Elements of this episode will seem relevant to recent real-life headlines as you meet the characters and the setting.moreless

I give this episode a "great" because I did not find myself scratching my head saying, "You expect me to believe any of this?" It felt like I was watching a relatively grounded action sequence played out by the special forces.

Cinemax badly wants you to come back, and therefore this episode is chock-full of melee combat, gun-battles, and sex. There are a few glimmers of character that bleed through in the brief exposition scenes, and I think there could be some room to grow these characters, but right now they are simply too young to tell.

They are clearly setting the ground work for a nice dynamic between Stonebridge and Damien. We'll have to wait and see how this plays out. There is a cerebral moment in this episode where Damien catches wind of a secret code. Could this be foreshadowing elements of his character in the future, or was this just a silly plot-device?

The show is designed to be relevant by pulling its inspiration from recent headlines and current real-world events. You'll be noticing parallels all throughout this episode, and it makes it a little more compelling to also imagine the real-world counterparts while enjoying this high-octane episode.

Based on the preview of next week, and the way this week played out, it definitely feels like we have a series here, and not something that is going to be overly episodic, which is nice.

I'll be tuning in next week. Will you?moreless

  • ALLUSIONS (1)

    • Stonebridge and Scott checked themselves into the hotel using names Langly and Byers. This is an allusion to "The X-Files" TV series or/and its spin-off "The Lone Gunmen" TV series to which Frank Spotnitz was one of the creators, producers and writers. Byers and Langly (and there was also the third person - Frohike) were characters of The Lone Gunmen - a group of "geeky" investigators who ran a conspiracy theory magazine. They had often helped FBI Special Agent Fox Mulder on "The X-Files".
