Just when you thought today's "Reality TV" shows are exploiting the greed of individuals, there was a time in the 50's where it was acceptable to exploit the poor, just for the sake of TV ratings.
Strike It Rich was a TV show that was on CBS from 1951-55 that was a showcase for down-on-their-luck individuals seeking charity. The idea was to have people plea their cases to the viewing audience & to let them decide who needs assistance the most.
Only a few "lucky" individuals got their "handout", but those who lost had to seek aid through a phone-in segment called the "Heart Line".
This show was castigated by many who saw it as a showcase of human misery, but despite the protests from both charity organizations & elected officials, the show managed to exploit the downtrodden for 4 seasons.
God Forbid should anyone try something like this again on TV today.moreless
