Paternity Test
AIRED:
Dylan is shocked when an old summer love from his college years, who is now suffering from heart disease (which is the leading cause of natural death in women), asks for his help in finding a heart donor. Lu, meanwhile, counsels a family who must decide whether or not to take their wife/daughter/sister off life support after she is in a horrible accident. Once they make a decision, they're faced by another even tougher one, however. Lana recruits an unsuspecting Kayla and Peter to participate in her senior project, which they think is simply finding out their IQs. Later, Dylan is shocked to learn that he has a teenaged daughter.moreless

Dylan's old summer fling,Miko, comes back with a problem, and a 15 year old daughter, Araya. Miko needs a new heart immediatley. Lu's patient has the heart, but she's not dead yet and the family won't take her off the respirator. Dylan learns that he's the father to Araya. This news shocks him. When Miko dies, he suddenly has to raise a 15 year old GIRL that he just met. Dylan goes to Lu when Araya wants to go back to her home town and live with her estranged, and strange as Dylan said, grandparents. Lu tells him to keep her here with him, and Dylan listens. Araya is now dealing wit the death of her mother, moving to a new city on the opposite of the states [from Cali to Philly], and the fact that she has to live with her new father, whom she doesn't like since he couldn't save her mother. This episode is so funny, and sad at the same time.moreless
  • good episode

I think this episode brings up the same point that the Terri Schaivo case brought up. Always let your loved ones know your wishes so that your wishes are fullfilled and no one else decides for you I can\'t imagine the stress of having to make a decision like that. I was surprised at the fact that Dylan had a daughter for 15 years and did not know it. I was also touched when Jonas tried to find Lu\'s dad. He\'s definately a keeper. I can\'t wait for the wedding it should be a great episode like every other one this season.moreless

This has been one of the best episodes of Strong Medicine ever.

At first, I didn't know how I felt about Dr. Dylan West coming to Rittenhouse and replacing Andy. I thought that he was a stuck up, Mr. Know It All. This episode proved me wrong.

Each family in this episode has to deal with death. When Roxy is in a boating accident, her husband, Wade, brings her into the hospital. Roxy had been under cold water for a substantial amount of time and her chance of survival was very slim. With no living will and no signed donors card, the family has to decided the future of Roxy.

Meanwhile, Dylan's old summer fling from 16 years ago arrives at Rittenhouse to recieve treatment for her heart condition, a condition that was previously diagnosed as asthma. Along with her she brings her 15 year old daughter, Araya. Miko drops the bomb to Dylan: Araya is Dylan's daughter. Nine months after Dylan left California, Miko gave birth to a little girl, but never had the courage to tell Dylan, until now.

Miko is in desperate need of a heart transplant and Roxy was a perfect match for her. Unfortunately, Roxy's family decided that since they took the respirator off, and Roxy was still breathing on her own, they shouldn't pull the plug on her. Because of their decision, Miko died peacefully in the presence of Araya, and unbeknownst to them, Dylan.

Before she passed away, Miko made Dylan promise her that no matter what happens to her, he will take care of Araya. When Miko died, Araya wanted to take a bus back to San Francisco. Dylan agreed, until Lu told him the secret of parenting: Teenage children test their parents. And even though Araya was a new daughter to Dylan, Lu believed that she was testing Dylan, and if Dylan chose to let her leave Philly, he proved to Araya that he didn't love her. With Lu's advice, Dylan made a tough decision to raise his teenage daughter by himself in Philly, despite Araya's plea to let her go back.

All Araya's life, she wondered who her father was. Now that she knows that her dad is a good guy, she can finally stop wondering. Lu, on the other hand, can't. All her life she wondered about her father. Her fiancée, Jonas, just wants to see Lu happy. So Jonas decides to find Lu's father. And the closes thing that Lu now has of her dad is an old watch that Jonas found.

Again, this episode was probably one of the best episodes of Strong Medicine. Dylan now gets to experience the trials and tribulations of fatherhood. This is exactly why I watch this show.moreless

I loved this episode. It was so dramatic and good. i was hooked. Dylan\'s character is so complex. Even though i didn\'t like his character at first i didn\'t like his character he\'s starting to warm up to me. It will be interesting to see how Dylan progresses at Rittnehouse.

I've watched nearly every episode of strong medicine, and i feel that the worst aspect of the show is that it always ends happily. everyone knows that in real life, Lu cannot save everybody and there are rarly simple solutions to the dificult problems faced by the patients on the show.

This episode, however, broke that some tired pattern. halfway through it, i found myself hoping that meico (sp?) did die so that Dr. West would be faced with the challenge of raising the daughter he never knew about. This episode did not have the predictible ending that Lu would convince the other family to donate the heart and meico would live with her daughter, happily ever after.

I think that this was just what the show needed. now, dylan will face the dificulties of raising his almost grown daughter. he will have to build a relationship from scrach and she will have to adjust to a new lifestyle. When mark went to school, and Dr. Cambell moved to washinginton with her children, there seemed to be a void in the show. much of strong medicine is the doctors personal lives and how it effects them. i am now looking foward to seeing Dylan try to get to know his daughter, who is at an age to rebel, and Lu get used to married life (only 2 more weeks :)).

In the other storylines for tonight, i love jonas character more and more each time i see him. he is so sweet and will do anything to make Lu happy. The storyline with Lana, Peter, and Kayla was, in my opinion, the weakest of the show. maybe it was because i had seen this exact storyline on an episode of everybody loves raymond, but who knows. i do like that relationship and want to see each of them grow within it. i think that they are good for each other, but the storyline that they had in this episode was simply a filler.

Strong Medicine took a turn for the better tonight and i was very happy with this episode. One other part that i particularly liked was the parilisim between Lu's relationship with her father and Dylan's with his daughter. She was able to make simple logic easy and help him realize that his daughter has to feel wanted by him, even if she does not apreciate it at first. Lu giving andvice and talking to Dylan on personal matters such as this show that they have grown since his first episode. (that was expected thou. it was the same way with both dana and andy :))moreless
