Cincinnati manager Dusty Baker missed his fifth consecutive game due to an irregular heartbeat. Interim manager Chris Speier managed the club in his absence. It was later determined that Baker had suffered a stroke. He has spent four days in a Chicago hospital receiving treatment.
Homer Bailey: I'll tell you one thing: If you want to get Adrian Gonzalez hot, have him hit against me. I throw balls out of the (strike) zone, and he still hits them out.
Clayton Kershaw: Obviously, I was not pitching that great, but you never want to pitch five innings and call it a day. Physically I felt fine. I wasn't throwing strikes, but it wasn't because of the hip.
(on his team's playoff hopes with nine games left in the season)
Adrian Gonzalez: Just win, man, that's all that matters. We can't go out there and win a series anymore. We've got to go out there and try to sweep. We win nine games, that gives us a legitimate shot at this.
