  • A three hit masterpiece and a sub two-hour ballgame. I'm in heaven!!! :)

Wow! Cliff Lee of the Cleveland Indians had a no-hitter going until St. Louis catcher Yadier Molina broke up the no-no on the first pitch of the eighth with a double off the right field wall. Lee gave up two more singles in the ninth and pitched what is one of the better games one can hope to see. He needed only 93 pitches and at one point retired 20 consecutive Cardinals. After walking two of the first three batters in the game, Lee did not allow another baserunner until Molina's eighth inning double.

Chris Carpenter, another Cy Young award winner, also pitched very well, allowing only five hits and one walk in seven innings of work. Unfortunately for him, two of the hits were home runs and accounted for all the scoring. Jamey Carroll led off the game with a walk and Mark DeRosa followed with a two-run homer. Kelly Shoppach added a solo shot in the fifth.

The neatest thing was the pace of the game. Both pitchers worked quickly and there was none of these endless trips to the mound, batters stepping out and pitchers backing off the rubber and so on. The game was a pure joy to watch and the announcing team did a great job too.moreless

  • TRIVIA (3)

    • Final Score:
      St. Louis Cardinals 0
      Cleveland Indians 3

    • Despite the win, Cleveland has a woeful 2-23 record this season when they score three runs or less.

    • Yadier Molina's double leading off the top of the eighth broke up Cliff Lee's no-hit bid. The shutout was the third of Lee's career and the three hits allowed matched the fewest he has allowed in a complete game in his career.

  • QUOTES (3)

    • Cliff Lee: I started locating my fastball on both sides of the plate, but my changeup was key. I had a good change and got some outs with it.

    • Chris Carpenter: Anytime you walk the leadoff hitter, there's a good chance of getting yourself in trouble. When a guy is up there doing what he's [Cliff Lee] doing, you know you're part of a special game. Unfortunately, it was on the wrong side. He worked us over pretty well tonight.

    • Cliff Lee: Whatever, man. They didn't score any runs, that's the ultimate goal. I knew I had a no-hitter, but I wasn't real excited or anything. I didn't want to get caught up in it. When we got the win, then I was excited.
