I think the outcome here was predictable. With all the excitement around the new season, a raucous sell-out crowd and the novelty of Houston being in the American League, I thought they would get off to a good start.

I agree with the announcers that another 100+ loss season is likely in store for Houston. What I wonder about is where the Rangers will finish. They've lost a tremendous amount of talent after their two World Series appearances and I expect it will catch up to them this year. I like the Rangers but this look like an Oakland-Anaheim battle.

On the new announcing team - I loved Terry Francona so anyone was bound to be a letdown. Being Canadian, I'm not familiar with John Kruk's work so I'll watch a few games and see how he does.moreless

The Astros start their American League run the right way, with a big time win. Not exactly the most marquee season opener ever, but the game was fun for the wild Texas environment, and just the general excitement around baseball starting again.

Hopefully for their fans Houston can make a run, but I doubt it. I think it's the A's and the Angels fighting for this division.

  • QUOTES (4)

    • Orel Herschiser: Ian Kinsler, over the last two years ... has homered on Opening Day. He'll have a few more at-bats to try to triplicate that.
Dan Shulman: Triplicate that? Triplicate that. Wow!
John Kruk: He's throwing that out in the first inning.
Dan: It's going to be a long year eh, Kruky. We're in way over our heads.
John: I didn't know I had to be smart to do this.

    • Houston Manager Bo Porter: It's more about the concepts that we've implemented. They do a great job with the information we provide and it allows them to play with confidence and allows them to play fast.

    • Bud Norris: To sit at 1-0 right now feels pretty darn good, and we've just got to go back out there on Tuesday and play some more baseball.

    • Carlos Pena: To come out with a win is perfect. To be part of it is really cool. To play our rivals here in Texas and to come out on top today, it's a treat.
