SuperFriends (1980)

Show Summary

After a slow start with the original series in 1973, the SuperFriends was becoming one of the most popular animated series on Saturday mornings during that decade thanks to subsequent series, including The All-New SuperFriends Hour (1977), Challenge of the SuperFriends with an additional half-hour series sans the villainous Legion of Doom (1978), and The World's Greatest SuperFriends (1979). The success of these series lead to more of the SuperFriends' continuing popularity into the next decade beginning with this one in 1980. The basic format for this one was three shorts between 7 and 8 minutes each in a half-hour segment in which our familiar superheroes battled various villains, monsters, alien creatures or beings, all for the sake of saving lives and averting catastrophe. Of course, the primary superheroes of this series are Superman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Batman and Robin, the stars of the previous SuperFriends series. And it's certain each short would feature at least one of them in action. Secondary heroes are the same as it was for The All-New SuperFriends Hour, including Green Lantern, Hawkman and Hawkgirl, Rima the jungle woman, the Flash, and the Atom, all of whom are established characters in DC Comics. Other superheroes who had been created for the previous series appear here as well, including Black Vulcan, Apache Chief, Samurai, El Dorado, and junior SuperFriends, Zan and Jayna, better known as the Wonder Twins, along with their long-tailed blue space monkey Gleek. Like The All-New SuperFriends Hour, it was a guarantee the trio would appear in at least one of the three shorts of this series. While the first 2 seasons of the series had aired on ABC, the third season was missing from the U.S. Saturday morning schedule altogether. It did air in international markets, but had first aired in the U.S. in syndication, eventually being part of The Superman/Batman Adventures, a compilation of SuperFriends and 1960's Filmation shorts featuring Superman, Batman and Robin, Aquaman and other Justice League members, which originally aired on the USA Network. Eventually, the third season has recently come out on DVD as SuperFriends: The Lost Episodes, which is now available for purchase for the viewing pleasure of those who are big fans of the series. This series ran from September, 1980 to September, 1983, eventually being replaced by SuperFriends: The Legendary Super Powers Show the following year, which itself was replaced by The Super Powers Team: Galactic Guardians in 1985, which would be the last of the various SuperFriends series.moreless
