  • Funny...

This episode introduces one of superman's most dangerous enemies Mr.Mxyzptlk, well I don't think the word enemy is the right one but he sure does get on superman's nerves. In the superfriends cartoon he was more of a threat to them. This episode is also pretty funny and on the commentary for the episode paul dini says that this is his favorite episode and his favorite character. They really wanted to bring him back in later episodes but the producers sais that it was to hard to think up story lines for him. He does appear in a later episode called little big head man where he teams up with bizzaro. Check this episode out. Later...moreless
  • Mr.Mxyzptlk wrecks havoc with Superman's life. To send him back to the 5th dimension for a certain amount of time, Superman must get Mxyzptlk to say his name backwards. Each time he returns and Superman tricks him into saying his name backwards.moreless

This is the funniest episode of the series in my opinion. Gilbert Gottfried, with his hysteria filled voice, is perfect as Mxyzptlk. Mr. Mxyzptlk's frustration grows each time he is tricked by Superman and becomes more and more determined to make Supes' life difficult. The scene with Mxyzptik walking around looking for McGirk is from the 1944 Superman comic book written by Jerry Seigal, the co-creater of Superman which introduces Mxyzptik. I thought it was well written and was a great comic relief episode. Comic Sandra Bernhardt has a part as Mxyzptik's girl friend in the fifth dimension and provides a sexy voice.moreless

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

  • TRIVIA (4)

    • The first comic on the page Jimmy shows Clark is a parody of Calvin & Hobbes called Dini the Meany. The writer is "Bill Wemissu" (We miss you), possibly a message to Bill Watterson (Writer of Calvin & Hobbes, which ended 2 years previous to this episode's air).

    • Trivia: This episode takes place over the course of an entire year! This also means that various other episodes could have taken place sometime during this episode.

    • When Mxyzptlk is in the art museum, a woman in the crowd looks a lot like Maven from Batman the Animated Series. Maven was Selina Kyle's (Catwoman's) secretary and friend. Both Superman The Animated Series and Batman the Animated Series were produced by the same team, so it's entirely plausible that it was really Maven.

    • Paul Dini, series producer and this episode's writer, has stated that his favorite Superman character is Mr.Mxyzptlk, and that this is his favorite episode.

  • QUOTES (3)

    • Lois: (sees a penguin in the office) Was that a penguin?

Clark: (not having seen the penguin) I'm afraid so.

    • Mr. Mxyzptlk: Your three months are up. And this time you're not gonna cheat me out of my fun!
Superman: Oh, it's you again, Mr. kltpzyxm.
Mr. Mxyzptlk: Not kltpzyxm! Mxyzptlk!! Now the first thing I'm gonna do-- (realizes what happened) Ah, nuts! (disappears)

    • Gspltsnz: Oh, Mxy, I don't like the way you're obsessing over this Superman person. Using our powers to torment humans is so... three dimensional.

  • NOTES (4)

    • When Mxy turns the Planet staff into animals, he turns Jimmy Olsen into a turtle. Among the comic book version of Jimmy's many transformations, arguably his most famous is that of Turtle Boy, a giant turtle-like creature.

    • The statue is voiced by Frank Welker, who voiced the Mxyzptlk character several times in the old Superfriends series.

    • First appearance of Streaky the cat, who flies with the help of Mxyzptlk. Streaky was the name of the Silver Age Supergirl's "super-cat". She (the cat) appears again in "Unity" as well as in the Justice League episode "Comfort and Joy."

    • The Mr. Mxyzptlk comic Jimmy shows Clark is supposedly written by Siegel and Shuster. Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster are the creators of Superman. This and all the other comic strips where hand drawn by Character Designer and Producer Bruce Timm. The other strips are all parodies of classic comic strips such as Charlie Brown and Dick Tracy.
