  • A Favorite Superman Heavy Makes His Appearance

The Main Man (Lobo) is a very popular DC villain, an interstellar bounty hunter / hit man and all-around nasty piece of work, who eventually got his own book. In this episode he takes on a dare to try to kill Superman. Even though he has no beef against the \'Blue Boy Scout\', ha agrees in order to protect his \'rep\'. Mayhem and much collateral damage ensues. Superman is finally forced to confront someone who can match him in a straight up fight. Things look grim for the Kryptonian as this episode ends with a \'to be continued\'... Voiced by Brad Garrett of Everybody Loves Raymond, Lobo is a memorable, scary and hugely entertaining bad guy.moreless
  • The main man comes to town and kicks Superman's butt, more or less. The episode itself was interesting, particularly a few scenes concerning Lois and boy scouts.

I enjoyed the episode, though I'd hardly classify it as more exciting or better than most of the other episodes. However, it did contain what is so far my favorite scene from the show: Kent admits to Lois that he is Superman and Lois doesn't believe him. Lois's later actions also give me cause for thought. She slaps Lobo and immediately clutches her wrist in pain, actions reminiscent of a scene from the episode where Metallo first appears. These actions make me imagine her slapping Clark, which would lead to a speedy discovery of his true identity and perhaps a trip to the hospital. The scene where Lobo says that Superman's not half the boy scout he thought he was seems confusing. Do they have boy scouts in space? Hmm. International troop of boy scouts. I wish there was an episode featuring them; perhaps one in which they've arrived on earth to crown Batman [motto: always prepared!] and Captain Marvel as their troop leaders. It would certainly make me laugh anyway. I haven't watched the second part of this episode yet, but I hope it has as many interesting tidbits as the first.moreless

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

  • TRIVIA (1)

    • When the Preserver first explains his job to Lobo, in one of the containment tubes you can see a creature that resembles Starro, the giant starfish monster that the Justice League fought in their first ever appearance in "The Brave and the Bold #28"

  • QUOTES (15)

    • Lobo: Hey, how's it going, chief? Maybe you can help me. I'm new in town, and I'm looking to find this geek here. (hands over the hologram of Superman)
Cop: Superman? We don't keep tabs on him. He only shows up if there's trouble.
Lobo: I can do trouble. (cocks gun)

    • Preserver: You are Lobo. Assassin, brigand, sociopath, monster.
Lobo: Ya left out "scourge of the cosmos".

    • Lobo: I'm givin' you geeks ten seconds before I frag everything in sight. One, ten!

    • The Preserver: I am The Preserver.
Lobo: And I'm the night manager at the hotel de frag. Looky there: It's checkout time!

    • Superman: Gotta go.
Lois: Give (Lobo) one for me. Give him a dozen!

    • Superman: Who are you?
Lobo: My calling card. (Punches Superman)

    • Lobo: This is gettin' lame. I thought (Superman)'d be here by now. Whoa, mosquito! (Fires gun)

    • Lobo: The name's Lobo. That is L as in "Lacerate", O as in "Obliterate", B as in "Disembowel", and O as in... I guess I can use "Obliterate" twice. What do you think?
Superman: (Grabs Lobo) I think you're a certifiable madman. (throws him into a car)
      Lobo: Thanks.

    • Lobo: Emperor Spewge knows it was you what pilfered his treasury, Sqweek. He's paying me to bring the dough back in a nice little pile.
      Sqweek: What about me?
      Lobo: Same deal.

    • The Preserver: There is one more creature I would like to add to my collection. The last Czarnian.
Lobo: Ha! I'm the last Czarnian! (to Superman) I fragged the whole planet for my high school science project. Gave myself an "A".

    • Lobo: Holy fragaroni! It's like I'm being torn apart! Cool.

    • Lobo: Now, the more you move, the worse it will hurt. So, feel free to go crazy.

    • Police Officer: What is it?
Superman: I don't know. I've never seen a creature like this...
      Lobo: I love you too.

    • Lois: I'm confused, Kent. See, I've lived in Metropolis most of my life and I can't figure out how some yokel from Smallville is suddenly getting every hot story in town.
Clark: Well, Lois, the truth is I'm actually Superman in disguise and I only pretend to be a journalist in order to hear about disasters as they happen, and then squeeze you out of the byline.
Lois: You're a sick man, Kent.
      Clark: (shrugging) You asked.

    • Lobo: It's always sweeter collecting a reward knowing that you beat some other geek out of it.

  • NOTES (4)

    • This episode is notable for a rare occurrence: Clark Kent directly telling Lois Lane that he is Superman, albeit in a off-hand manner. "Well, Lois, the truth is, I'm actually Superman in disguise..." She doesn't believe him.

    • This episode introduces Lobo and the Preserver.

    • This story led to the Batman Beyond episode "The Call, Part 1" & "2". At one point, the camera pans past the starfish creature featured in "The Call". Parts of this episode were reanimated (without Lobo) for the Batman Beyond flashback.

    • Sherman Howard, who voices the Preserver, played Lex Luthor in The Adventures of Superboy.

    • Lobo: Ding, dong! Lobo calling!

This is a play on the "Avon Calling" advertising campaign, made by the Avon Products company.

    • Lobo: Light's out, Clyde.
'Clyde' was the name of the orangutan that hung out with Clint Eastwood's character in the movie Every Which Way But Loose and Any Which Way You Can.
