Oh my. Thank God for that! There was me ready to list everything that had been bugging me about season 9 of Supernatural here, and, as always, they pull a superb episode out of the bag. There was a lot going on here; in fact, it was like the writers took most of the things not really working in season 9 and sorted them out. But before we get to the good stuff, let's address the elephant in the room: KEVIN'S DEAD!!
NOOO! Why, Supernatural? Why, why why??? Why do you always make us love a character, then kill them off? Kevin had been through so much: Leviathan, Crowley, Angels... he'd survived it all. And he dies, suddenly and horribly, killed by a supernatural being possessing his friend. I'd really grown to like Kevin; he'd fast become a pseudo Bobby to the Winchesters: the guy at the end of the phone who they always turn to for assistance. I thought he was going to be around for a while, but nope. It's all the more tragic as Dean promised Kevin they'd always protect him. Kevin even tried to leave at one point, recognising any third wheel to the Winchesters (unless they happen to be called Castiel, and he's died a few times himself) is not long for this world. Dean gave him his usual speech about family, and he stuck around. And it got him killed. While I'm hoping that Cas might be able to bring him back, I doubt they'll go to winter hiatus on this cliffhanger just to undo it come January. Looks like Kevin's gone for good. What's the betting Charlie's next?
So, now that's out of my system, what about the good stuff? Well, like I said... it really is like the writers agreed with my gripes, and came in to fix them. So, at the top of the list:
Cas has his mojo back!!! Thank God for that. I'd made no secret that I wasn't feeling a powerless Castiel; as I predicted, the writers just had no clue what to do with him as a human. In the end, they seemed to settle for comedy, because, let's face it, that's pretty much all you could do with a powerless Cas. The problem is, when one of your regulars becomes comic relief, you know you've gone wrong they've realized this. Cas outwitted his torturer and took his grace. This doesn't mean he's back to full power, or that he's even as powerful as he was before. Cas was a bad ass Angel, having been a General himself. Therefore, it's clear he's taken the power of a lessor Angel, which opens up so much story potential. How much power does he now have? Will he not be strong enough to take on Bartholomew? Will absorbing another Angel's grace actually slowly weaken him, leading him to search for his own? Is it only temporary? So much they can do with this. Cas isn't boring human Cas any more, but nor is he the ultra powerful Cas they struggle so much to write for. The good news is he has power now, so it's time to see him kick some ass. He said it himself; he's ready.
Another thing that was going on the list: the Angel storyline wasn't interesting. They sorted this out too. It's not just Bartholomew we need to worry about; there are many factions of Angels, all looking for power, equally as dangerous. Malaketh clearly thought he was the superior Angel here, yet Barth managed to outsmart him in turn. As the torturer Angel remarked: it's not clear who will win. All that is clear is that each faction will stop at nothing to come out on top. Both sides do, however, want the same thing: to overthrow Metatron. And, if things were not complicated enough, Metatron returned with his own scheme. He wants Angels of his own to help rebuild Heaven with him as God. Or, at least... that's what he says. I wouldn't trust him as far as I could throw him.
Which leads me to the final thing: advancement in the Sam possession story! So, it turns out Ezekiel wasn't Ezekiel at all, but a notoriously bad Angel called Gadreel. Or, is he bad? There certainly seems to be shades of grey with him; he took the blame for evil descending upon Earth, for Lucifer being able to corrupt early mankind, but it wasn't said that he deliberately allowed this to happen. He even said himself... he's not a killer. However, he has been imprisoned for many years. He's angry, he's alone and he's looking for purpose. Metatron has provided that to him, by giving him a hit list. And, thus, he's killed Kevin.
While it would have been nice to have Sam possessed by something we know about (I was half hoping for Lucifer!!!), as it would have been a much more powerful twist, I'm very intrigued by this new character, and there's scope more stuff they can do with him. Does Sam know he's possessed, or has Gadreel completely cut him off? Sam has managed to overpower Lucifer before, an extremely powerful archangel. As powerful as Gadreel is, he's nowhere near as powerful as that, so there might be some hope for Sam.
2013 was a much better year for Supernatural than 2012. I loved season 8's second half; it sorted out the kinks of the first half and delivered right up until the end. Season 9 looks set to do the same. While these past few episodes have been hit and miss, this episode really makes me take a lot of that back. As things stand, Dean has been left gazing at the corpse of Kevin, once again having failed both Sam and his friend. Cas has his powers back, kind of, which opens up plenty of avenues for the character. Gadreel has run off in Sam's body to do the bidding of Metatron. Bartholomew and Malaketh and many other Angels are still at war. And, finally, the boys still have Crowley locked in the bunker, and Abaddon has had plenty of time to build up her forces.
A very good episode, and a very strong ending to a very good year for the show. I'm so very excited for what's to come now. In one episode, all my doubts were vanquished. Well done, guys. I'll see you next year!
I absolutely love Supernatural. I could sit all day and binge-watch the first 5 seasons if there was enough time in the day and my mortgage could somehow pay itself.
Seasons 1 through 5 are the best. Things go downhill after that. Season 6 wasn't too bad, just not great. Season 7 was just awful. The Levithan were a joke and never materialized as something to be more terrified of than demons or monsters. Season 8 wasn't great, it was rehash of Season 4's story line with the blind double-cross/didn't see it coming climax at the end.
There are, of course, sprinkled throughout each season a gem here and there, but nothing like the earlier seasons, where most every episode was brilliant with a bad one here or there (Route 666, Bugs).
Simply put, its the greatest TV show I've ever watched. I will MAKE my kids watch this.
What a great episode. Rather than appearing to be a filler episode this was a lovely reminder that Dean and Sam are hunters after all! Jensen Ackles acting being a dog was hilarious and worked superbly. The story worked straight forwardly and well. The killer was the ending with Sam starting to realise not all is right and Dean realising Zack maybe getting too comfortable in Sams meat suit!
I have been a steady viewer of Supernatural ever since it first came on the air. Now I feel old telling people that I remember the first episode when it was fresh. I mostly tuned in since Jensen Ackles is one of my favs and I loved him in the way to shortlived Dark Angel. No one delivers badboy quips quite the way he does.
But I stayed for the solid writing and easygoing storytelling bringing me along a not to serious and not to easy road. I do feel the show hast lost some of its drive and I am quite concerned as to how they are going to salvage the world and the show after some really (in the long run) boring seasons. I miss the simple ghosts and time traveling episodes, can we get them back? Oh and please give the boys some love interest or in the least some sex interests. Dean is not a masturbating perv but a damn magnet for hot chicks and that should be written in there. And Sam needs something to live for before his depression drags not only him and the show down but me with it.
When I started watching Supernatural I was slightly sceptical at first because I never was into horror or angels and demons and that kind of stuff. But all it took was three episodes to get me hooked and I ended up watching all 8 seasons in less than a month. I agree in some episodes the storyline gets a little bland but over all the show never fails to deliver.
It was one of the best TV Series since the last decade... But ever the since the main story line ended after Season 5, they just couldnt pull up a powerful storyline to keep everyone intrigued... But still worth the wait for Season 9...
I like the show for the fact that the writers always try to please and satisfy us fans accordingly. I like the show cos it's something interesting. The first few episodes were kinda once I continued watching it, gotta say, I just can't stop. Again it has it's low time, when the story line was kinda bland and it seems boring at times. However, I would say once the angel Castiel was introduced it's got interesting again with demons and all. For me, I like Castiel most cos he is an angel and everything about Castiel is mesmerising. It just got me chilled and wonder how cool it would be if I could have my own Cas. I mean the angel who would always come when you call. Gotta say, I'm in love with Cas the angel.
I love this show, I have every season on dvd, but this last season was just kinda eh. I think they're running out of ideas for the show, and what was the point of getting rid of Bobby? I read from an Interview he and he said he didn't want to leave the show. So why get rid of him? Get back to before. I like the Angels in it but this shit with Crowley is just getting old.
I have watched supernatural ever since the first episode aired in Aus. Loved the first five seasons (especially the introduction of Cas), tolerated the next two seasons (didn't love the whole leviathan thing, although the references to exploding d*cks were kind of funny) and thoroughly enjoyed super returning to form in season 8. Epic season finale btw. Can't wait for season 9! America will get it well before we do so make sure you upload it quickly! Love my super boys :)
I just started watching this show just this summer in June from the beginning, and I have got to say that I am hooked! Once you start watching 1 episode, you just gottah know more of what happens next that you watch the next one. I am currently on season 7 and I'm so excited to watch the recent season soon! :) CW needs to keep this show going, cause it hooks you from the start! Love the actors too! :) Jensen brings in the funny and Jared brings in the seriousness a great balance. :)
In Supernatural the characters live in a world where absolutely anything is possible and they are always willing to die or trade their soul at the crossroads for one another. The viewers connect because a lot of us have had a friendship or relationship as codependent as Sam and Dean and enjoyed every minute of it. There's also the action, adventure and shirtless muscular bad ass guys who drive a muscle car. Women love Sam because he's gorgeous, in great shape and sensitive. Women love Dean because he is dripping with masculinity, bold and confident. Then there's Bobby, a man full of knowledge and common sense, but not afraid to get his hands dirty. Castiel perhaps one of the most interesting of characters women find adorable and men are amused by his naivety. With endless possibilities excellent writers and an all around great crew this show can keep going and the fans will keep clinging to it waiting for the next episode.
A friend of mine loaned me all her DVD's for the show and I watched my first episode two months ago. I was initially expecting it to be some kind of chick-centric show but there was enough bro-laughs to have a good time and I watched the entire run of the show within a few months. The first few seasons were great however the later seasons with their overly long, over-arching plots with a seasonally emotional Sam were a little... annoying. Fortunately we had some great accompanying characters like Castiel, Bobby, Crowley, to balance out the annoying Sam moments and once you get a season under you're belt you're in it for the long haul.
