    • The earthquake was reported as being of a magnitude 9.8 in the "Hispaniola Trench" .
There is no Hispaniola Trench, but there is a Puerto Rico Trench which runs along the boundary between the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea just north of Puerto Rico, and includes the deepest part of the Atlantic, the Milwaukee Deep (28,232 feet). Seismologists have found that an underwater earthquake there could generate a sizable tsunami.

The strongest earthquake ever recorded was a magnitude 9.5, in Chile in 1960. The 2004 Indian Ocean Earthquake, which generated tsunamis that killed over 280,000 people, was a 9.3. A magnitude 9.8 quake would be the equivalent of a 5-mile diameter asteroid hitting the earth at twice escape velocity.
