  • Slim Pickens guest stars in an outstanding episode of this crime drama that shows its ability to frequently interject considerable humor.

Four years before he became a pop icon by riding a nuclear bomb to its destination in Doctor Strangelove, Slim Pickens was simply a western movie actor and a frequent guest star in TV series. He is at his absolute comedic best in this episode of SurfSide 6.

This episode begins with a federal agent sneaking aboard the houseboat to meet with and hire Ken for a special assignment. A federal treasury engraver has disappeared while honeymooning near Bass Creek, and the feds are worried. The agent picks Ken not only because of his detective agency’s successes, but because Ken’s favorite vacation hideaway is Bass Creek. The female federal agent and Ken head for Bass Creek, posing as newlyweds on a honeymoon. Ken discovers that his favorite watering hole is no longer run by the friends he had made on his numerous fishing trips to the area, but rather by new people unfamiliar to Ken or other locals.

While fishing (for clues more than bass), Ken encounters Muskrat George (Pickens), who has been shot and wounded by the newcomers to the area. With Muskrat George’s help, Ken and the agent track down the missing engraver.

Without question, Slim Pickens’ spunky Muskrat George steals this episode, and series star Van Williams (the central series regular in this episode) seems all too happy to allow that to happen. Pickens uses his background as a western movie sidekick to perfection here, playing the sassy swamp dweller with wreckless abandonment. His performance is a treasure, not only for his fans, but for anyone who appreciates good comedy superimposed onto suspense.

And, while this episode does have considerable comedy, the suspense is also plentiful. Only at the conclusion, when the retired engraver is found, is the elaborate web into which he was dragged unraveled and he realizes he was taken.

This is one of the best episodes of SurfSide 6, thanks to strong writing with a multi-layered plot, and especially thanks to a sterling performance from the great Slim Pickens.moreless
