Episode Summary

Janu has issues with Katie after she hears her talking behind her back, leaving everyone feeling uncomfortable and leaving her feeling alienated. Despite this, Janu is able to help in her team's victory at the Reward Challenge. Tom, Caryn, Gregg, and Janu win the first reward challenge of the new merge, but afterwards Janu can't seem to stomach the reward feast. Then, after being the first to lose the Immunity Challenge, Janu is forced to live on a beach on her own for one night. Despite feeling alienated by her tribe throughout the game, she comes back to Koror the next morning feeling happier. At Tribal Council, Stephenie knows she is next to go and makes a heartfelt and tearful plea not to be voted off. After thinking it over, Janu decides to leave the game, stating that it's better for her and in doing so, saves Stephenie from the vote. Janu becomes the 11th contestant to leave Palau.moreless

  • Will she stay or will she go? I'm of course referring to Stephenie, the Sole Ulong Survivor, who now lives with Koror.

Having survived the first 'post-merge' vote, Stephenie quickly found herself back on the chopping block. She failed to win Immunity (again), and even the tribe she was on for the Reward Challenge lost. There were many intriguing things about this episode.

    1) Exile Island. This is the origin of that fantastic idea that would be essential to many of the subsequent seasons. This time there was no Idol. The person who bailed first in the Immunity Challenge was deserted for a day and night, with just some necessities. Janu, naturally, was first out. Really early too. Miraculously, she managed to start fire (for her first time in the game) all alone. This rejuvenated her and ultimately made her feel as if she'd come "full circle."

    2) Tribal Council. For the most part, the producers/Probst stay 'objective' and out of the game, but sometimes you can see their hands at work. This is clearly such an occasion. There was an Immunity Challenge. Tom won. He was immune. Yet there was NO vote. You know why? Because at the probing of Probst, Janu decided to leave the game right there and then, especially if it would keep Stephenie in the game. I'm sorry, but if she wanted to quit, she should be able to do so, and then, RIGHT AFTER, the remaining players should've voted ANOTHER person out. As it is, Steph was saved by Janu's act. Which really was best for the viewers. But still, naughty producers and Probst! 3) Janu quitting but still being a jury member. I guess they needed their odd number of jurors!

    4) The Final Four alliance seemingly broken! Yes there were 8 players, but Janu was on her own and would vote whatever. This should've been the perfect opportunity for Tom, Ian and Katie to solidify their Final Four alliance with Stephenie. They could've taken control right there! But instead they let Gregg convince them to out Stephenie. At Tribal Council, it was evident that even Tom had gone against this Day 2 alliance, and was voting for Stephenie. Amazingly she stayed because Janu quit.

    5) The preview for next week. The Day 2 alliance seems crushed now, while a possible all-girls alliance is in the works to oust the strong men of the game.

All-in-all a tense episode with lots to talk about.moreless

    • Janu is the second castaway in Survivor history to be a member on the jury without having been voted out of the tribe. Paschal in Marquesas was eliminated without being voted out and was a jury member. Janu is the first to be allowed to be a jury member after voluntarily leaving the game. Edit
    • Janu is the fourth castaway in Survivor history to voluntarily leave the game (after Osten in Pearl Islands and Jenna M. and Sue in All-Stars). After Osten, she is the second castaway to allow her torch to be laid down. She is the first contestant to quit the game and still be allowed a goodbye speech during the closing credits. Edit
    • For the second time this season, Jeff does not say "The tribe has spoken" after extinguishing a castaway's torch. Edit

    • For the second time this season, Jeff does not say "The tribe has spoken" after extinguishing a castaway's torch. Edit
    • "Survivor: Palau" has now had four castaways eliminated from the game without a Tribal Council vote during their respective episode throughout one season (Wanda, Jonathan, Bobby Jon and Janu), a series record. "Survivor: All-Stars" previously held the record with two (Sue and Jenna M.). Edit
