This was a two hour episode (and was followed by a reunion show). An amazing 52 million viewers watched this season finale.
Kelly won four individual immunity challenges, a "Survivor" series record for female contestants that still stands after 21 seasons.
In an Entertainment Weekly interview, Host Jeff Probst rated this season as his favorite of seasons 1-9. He said that the series' "virgin season" was "solid," and that the cast really made the show. He named Sue Hawk's infamous "Rats and Snakes" speech as "the greatest Survivor moment." TV Guide and TV Land also named Sue's speech as one of the most memorable moments in television history.
This episode features Richard Hatch walking through an airport and getting into his brand new car. This scene had to be filmed four different times, each with a member of the final four in order to keep the secret of who really won.
This is the only time in which the revealing of the final votes is taped, while still at Tribal Council.
This episode was filmed on April 20, 2000.
Susan: (To Kelly) You will not get my vote. My vote will go to Richard. And I hope that is the one vote that makes you lose the money. If it's not, so be it, I'll shake your hand, and I'll go from here, but if I were ever to pass you along in life again, and you were laying there, dying of thirst, I would not give you a drink of water. I would let the vultures take you and do whatever they want with you, with no ill regrets. I plead to the jury tonight to think a little bit about the island that we have been on. This island is pretty much full of only two things, snakes and rats. And in the end of Mother Nature, we have Richard the Snake, who knowingly went after prey, and Kelly who turned into the rat that ran around like the rats do on this island, trying to run from the snake. I feel we owe it to the island spirits that we have come to know, to let it be in the end the way Mother Nature intended it to be, for the snake to eat the rat.
Colleen: (Casting her vote for Kelly) So, buy a raft and start an adventure tour or something…and maybe it'll make you nice or something. Okay. That's all.
Rudy: (During his jury speech) I don't have anything to say, I just wanna let everyone know how stupid I feel for letting go of that pole yesterday.
Kelly: The only thing that kept me in this game this far is that stupid necklace.
Sean: (To Richard) Your FNF idea, Fat Naked Fag, is funny, but Fat Naked Fag with a million dollars is even funnier.
Colleen: This is a really difficult vote because doesn't anyone really think, "Go Kelly! She's number one!" or, "Rich…glad he made it to the final two"? No! I think we all just wanna end it, really.
Greg: I feel like Kelly went through several identity crises on TV – not identity crises, just different identities.
Kelly: I regret trusting Sue, being vulnerable to her, because that hurt me…in a lot of ways.
Rudy: I got three votes, and then I got two votes, and then I got one vote, and then they all forgot about me.
Jeff: (Snuffing Rudy's torch) In this case, Kelly has spoken.
Kelly: (Denying Jeff's temptation) I know what oranges smell like.
Jeff: You don't know what these oranges smell like.
Rudy: I gave away a million bucks. I would've won a million bucks if I'd have kept on holding that. Ain't nobody's fault but mine.
Susan: (In her final words) This was a lot easier, for me, than driving a truck through Chicago every day of the week.
Rudy: (Deadpan, casting a vote for Susan) Her time was up.
Kelly: (Casting a vote for Richard) It's time for Rich to get off the stage.
Rudy: (About the Immunity Challenge) I think the challenge will be questions about these people – how old they ware, what they do for a living – which I don't know. And I don't care.
Rudy: In order to win the money, you gotta make an alliance or go home.
Kelly: I'm in it for me now, and everybody else can kiss my ass.
Rudy: (voting for Richard to win) We had an alliance to the end, and I'm fulfilling my obligation.
Kelly: I've lost some weight, I've lost some muscle, I've lost some sanity…
This was the last episode to be broadcast in the show's original timeslot Wednesdays at 8:00 p.m. until season 21 in 2010.
When the final Tribal Council arrives, Richard is rewarded with the title of the first Survivor winner, as well as one million dollars and a brand new car.
At the final regular Tribal Council, Kelly, the only person whose vote is relevant, casts her vote for Rudy, thus sending him to the jury and bringing she and Richard into the final two. At 72, Rudy is the oldest castaway to ever play the game.
At the first Tribal Council in this episode, Susan is voted out of the island after a tie-breaker between she and Rich.
Kelly wins the two Immunity Challenges in this episode.
